Message 1008211 - Posted: 25 Jun 2010, 18:09:11 UTC

So we have come full circle from Seti asking for more participants to apparently admitting that they have more than they can serve right now.

I am trying to keep my happy kitty face on right now, but I just don't see how this is going to work having a 3 day outage every week.

Between the new butched up quota system and recent server problems, I have 1 rig that will not have any work at all in a few hours, one that has no Cuda work left, and the other 2 are gonna be sucking Cuda fumes very soon.

I can see the worst case.....
Outage Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday....
Come back up on Friday....bandwidth maxed out with rigs trying to report 3 days worth of work and trying to replenish depleted caches....
Servers crash Saturday, nothing available until Monday morning...bandwidth maxed out again.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Don't get me wrong....I am going to stick it out and see what works out.
Maybe with the downtime, things will clear on the servers enough that the uptime will be more reliable and work will flow...assuming that stupid quota thingy doesn't bollix things up every time there is an innocent Cuda WU error.

I DO applaud the decision to get more science done for the project....I have always said that I love the credits, but the science really is the main thing.

I will just be unhappy if I am no longer able to contribute my resources in the fashion I am accustomed to.

And save the advice about finding another project to crunch for.....these days I do not crunch simply for the sake of credits...if I did, I would have had the rigs on higher paying projects long ago. For me it is Seti or nada.

I wish Eric and company the best in this new direction for his project. I just hope it does not leave me behind as it advances. I have a lot invested in it too.

Meow meow.

Agreed, May as well shut the lights off, It's a terrible idea, I wonder who thought of this idea?

I said nothing about turning the lights off, my friend.
I said I am gonna try to stay the course and hope it works out for the best.

On the surface, I don't like the thought of it either. But apparently Eric has made the decision that this is the best course of action to advance the science end of his project, and I will try to respect that as things unfold.

It's really a shame that resent management decisions have caused this to happen

Unfortunately there is nothing that we volunteers can do
They run the project & do as they please

They don't even pay attention to anything said in these group discussions

My 'investment' in S@H may be much smaller, but I don't see things, as they are, now, as being bad, overall. Perhaps I'm an optimist. Why switch the lights off, when you cannot see? Lets just stay calm and see how things go.

Yes, there is something else we as volunteers can do. Stop making unproductive negative comments.
I have communicated with Eric, and he is more aware of the goings on here in the forums than some might realize. But he obviously cannot respond to every comment made here.
Yes, they do run the project as they see fit and believe the best to further it's end goals. They are not here to please those of us who have chosen to donate their computer resources when they can.

Oh, and BTW, the other thing we can collectively do is to donate funds to the project to bolster it's finances.

I donated another $100.00 a few weeks ago, just so some of you know I am not blowing smoke up anybody's petoot.

I've had three weeks of averaging 65 hrs/wk at work (a work colleague has been diagnosed with terminal cancer), and all you care about is petty 'point-scoring'? GROW UP!

If there's just enough WUs to fill the cache when Seti is online, I don't see a big problem.

That remains the 'wild card'....

I would be perfectly happy if the servers can be more stable during uptime and the new quota system does not prevent me from building cache to layover during the extended outages.

We shall see.

I don't mind the new project schedule, actually - in fact, I am supportive of it. A project has to do what a project has to do.
It seems more scientifically oriented now, and that was the original goal was it not?
Not about the forums, not about the credits, simply about the science. Call me a purist if you want.

Perhaps we will see a breakthrough when the results are analyzed, and if we do, and if it is announced, it will be the biggest event in the history of humanity. We are no longer alone in this vast cosmos.

As a result, I'm winding down my obligations to S@H - leave it running on my aging Celeron (which is heading to 8 years). My two other computers, the i7 and the laptop will run CP.net full time.

I'll still be donating financially... and I really wish Eric and the crew the best with the data analysis.

Will it be my workunit that finds it? Or will it be yours? :)

Loving the new, pure, direction of S@H!
- Luke.

I Can live with the 3 day outage. Am I happy no, But If it means better up time, Im all for it. I just upped my cache to 3 days, when All i had before was .75 days. It should help me now that ive reinstaled lunatics and turned off the vlar killer. I had way to many kills that kept my cuda cache from ever getting more than 20 . most times less.

I have noticed that completion times are way out of wack. Says my cuda tasks are 32 hours. but have been getting done in the usual 30 minutes. I guess that will sort itself out. I sure wish I could get a crapload of AP though I allways did like crunching them.

Me, Im with Mark Ill crunch seti till they shut her down.

If the forum was still up I'd be ok with It. I still wouldn't like It that much of course, But the forum would make It bearable.

Some one did ask that in Marks post if the forums would be up, but he never answerd it. I would guess it would stay up.

If it didnt then the STUFF would hit the fans big time:)

In the Olden Days (Seti Classic) they used to take seti down for a month. Since Seti Boinc Started, they have been working what would be the new analysis format.

With things happening in RFI rejection (look at the Server status page. I do daily) and work on NITPCKR they are ready to start working on the analysis. In private convesation with Eric as to the hardware that was needed (which they do not have). HIs statement was three multiproc/multicore machines with a ButtTon of RAM and a clone of the science database. In that configuration would take about three years to sift all the results.

So now with early tests where/when NITPCKR was running the Database slowed to a crawl where it then crashed and an outage happened... They are saying that in order to get the analysis started they have to extend the outage so that the database is not being overran... Does everyone want a Month Time out?

I have noticed that on my machines that had a venue that was set for a one day cache, it is being ignored and I have "more." it is like it is being setup so that the "set it and forget it users" will not be bothered by the three days down time.

Did "we" forget that we are here to Find ET, and the only way that can happen is if the Analysis that is going to happen in those three days a week starts.

Note: If anyone has a functional Blade Server with about 8 Proc's laying around which can properly connect to a SAN that might be willing to get the tax credit, Please PM me.

Regards

Pappa

The only thing else I will say right now is that the new quota system either has to be relaxed, fixed, or put out to pasture.
It is making it virtually impossible to build a decent sized cache for the GPU.
The GTX295 on the Frozen 920 has shows completing 1857 tasks, I see 2 errors, and it has a quota of 116. Which is full, so now it gets the quota limit response when attempting to get more work.

If this new extended outage schedule is gonna work at all for those of us with high production hosts, which I would think would be valued by the project, this system much be re-evaluated if keeping errant hosts in check is truly it's intent.

If work allocation is really it's intent, then there should be some settings that each project can set to allow full work flow, and Seti should do so.

If Seti really wants to allocate work.......well, then my words are simply being flung to the breeze.

Which is it, Admins and Devs? Which is it?
