I have been running the seti@home client for a while now and recently found that when I try to update the project, it keeps telling me either it cannot connect to server, or that there is no default internet connection. I dont use a proxy, I run the connection streight through my wireless connection to the router, then to the internet. Is this problem due to recent setbacks at your end or do I need to reconfigure anything at my end? please advise, Thanks

The "problem" is that SETI is down right now for Maintainance and should be back up this evening. They have just gone to a three day maint. schedule.

So yes I do feel you owe me some kind of explanation as to what is going on and if you no longer want my help then I should be informed just as I was invited back. Treating people like this is Totally unprofessional, you asked some of us to come back we should be informed. I will also send a copy of this thru the beta email.

The project is NOT for your benefit, it is for theirs what we donate the time.
It has been discussed, ad nausium, how they are doing so much, on so big a project, with so very little.
They don't OWE you ANYTHING. Please go away, perminately, you spoiled little brat.

I never cease to be amazed when RAC near 200 tells RAC 67K+ to go away, that they are not needed.

Is it really them that is not needed? Obviously a bit of respect seems too much to ask from some... But I think we could do without abuse from the cheap seats.

And when testing of untested software in live projects goes wrong, YES tempers flare.

But large contributors of computer resources deserve some respect. They did it FOR the SETI project. Not to test BOINC for the most part. They are rightfully frustrated when they can not put that horsepower to the ground to benefit the project they invested time, and money to do.

I do feel for the admins. Because I suspect the vast majority of the current problems are not hardware related. The current loss of redundancy on the Master/replica database.. no idea. But it should be interesting when we hear the cause... The all important "first error message"

There are perhaps 1000 big guns, maybe 100 of them post on the boards, mostly about their RAC or big purchases. When the project has problems they seem to be the only ones complaining about how they are being ill treated and are deserving of special treatment because they spent a lot of money on specialized equipment which they refuse to help other projects with. What they forget is that this was their choice, the project never requested it and has no duty to treat them differentially. They seem to forget that there are another 170000 smaller contributors that just do the bulk of the jobs as the project requested and you rarely hear them complain. I respect minorities, but I don't believe they should get preferential treatment no matter how loud they get.

I've never owned more than two computers at any time and I've only upgraded them when they broke down. I do run them 24/7 which is more than the project ever asks for. I also do my bit for a dozen other projects. Having mostly worked minimum wage jobs and soon approaching retirement, I've never been able to contribute financially to the project. Most of my post are in the Q&A section where I do my best to answer questions when I feel qualified and that's my extra contribution to the project.

I do get sick and tired of the whine feast on the boards when the project has problems or make major changes. In the last few weeks, I've had to self censor at least 2 dozen times and used the delete key instead of the post button so as to not inflame the situation. I do apologize if the couple small rant like this one, I allowed to slip by, offended anyone.

Hiamps complaint seems to be that we are not getting enough information about what is happening, i.e. problems with the project. He was asked back to the project and now the "rules" have changed with little explanation--saying they are doing more science is not very informative. It shouldn't matter if he has a huge RAC or a more modest one, he appears to be asking for the project managers to please justify these changes in outage schedule, work rationing, etc. that affect us all.

From my personal point of view, as the project has cut back, on giving out work, then so have I cut back on my number of machines, and the time they are powered up. But that's my solution.

You make some good points here -- while I do have a large set of computers, all running BOINC, I do not rely on SETI being fully operational -- over the years (and I started doing SETI over 9 years ago with SETI classic), I've added projects and backed off on SETI. At the very least, it has reducedmy whine level here <smile>.

I would note that at some point, it did seem that SETI project management (not the folks minding the store here) were trying to leverage their 'big BOINC on the block' status to impose their 'BOINC view' on the increasing array of other projects. It seems that has been less the case over the past several months, perhaps in recognition of the need for them to focus on the home front and to let the other projects do what they do best.

That being said, I would like to know if the 4 days on, 3 days off cycle is a long range (months or years) versus short range (a few weeks) plan of action here.

If it matters, I agree with BarryAZ and Hi-amps. And I also agree that for the good of the (seti) project, we slow pokes should control our egos (or ids, as the case may be) and keep the big guns very happy. It is only rational, unless you are here to relish in the ad hoc complexities and idiosyncracies of Boinc.

What I would like to know is whether this 4/3 schedule is doing anything on the operations side of things. The only measure I have access to I think is Scarecrow's graphs. Looking at them over the last two months, the recent 4/3 change doesn't seem to have changed much in performance. There is a steady rise of wu's ready to send, and perhaps a decrease in results waiting validation. But these variations have been seen before I would guess. Otherwise, can anyone comment on the efficacy (using objective measures) of this change of schedule?

However my Quad core pc has only been able to have 5 work units at any one time. After an update it almost always says, Not reporting or requesting new tasks(unless it is reporting a task). If uninstalled BOINC and tried to reinstall. Any help would be great. TIA!
