Not sure but it's funny that mine is only getting work for CPU, all my GPU requests have been turned down, been using the rescheduler to get GPU work.

This could be the reason. I know it's hard not to move units to the GPU's (been doing it myself) but it does screw up the allocations at the server end. I'm finding the rigs that have had units moved to the GPU's get a lot of CPU units and few if any GPU work. The rigs I've been able to keep my fingers out of get more GPU than CPU work but it's still only a few at a time.

I just have a very warm QX6700 B1 cpu @ 3.4GHz on water and a GTX295 at stock speeds on air, It'll be interesting to see how much I get for each.

Well, after I went to sleep, my rig continued to download and adjust completion times. Now they are not too far off, and I am not about to run out of work. Before the recent changes went into effect, I was running a 6 day cache. Once my rig was drained, I switched to a 1 day cache so I could adapt to what ever happened. Still at empty, a few days later I switched to a 3 day cache. I was still empty, or with only a couple of hours work. My rig was tuned and waiting when I got the message of the extended outage. Many others were reporting that they were getting work, and of course some were not so I didn't think too much about it, and crunched for Einstein. Yesterday when I learned of the new scheduled outage, I thought what the heck, and set it for a 10 day cache, expecting to get a few wu's at best. I did a reboot, and tasks started coming in, in trucks! Every time I looked, more were downloading, and with all the trouble as of late, I wasn't about to stop it.

Now it looks like I have a 10 day cache, with completing times not to far off from reality. It may be a few days before my RAC settles out and starts to climb again, but I am very pleased that I am once again pumping out work like there is no tomorrow. So for this mega-cruncher, patience paid off and I am back in buisiness!

I haven't messed with my cache yet. I'm afraid to. When this first started I was getting WUs that thought they would only take a couple of minutes but were really normal length. When I decided to do NNT it took me five days to run down what was supposed to be a three day cache. Since I did my detach the first WUs to come in thought they would take 16 hours each. They have now dropped to a guesstimate of 4 hours but that is still way high and both my CPUS and GPU are the same guesstimate (or close enough even though my GPU is at least twice as fast!). What I'm afraid of is hitting a bunch of shorties and throwing the to completion time way off in the other direction. I'm going to wait until I'm sure things have calmed down before I worry about maybe upping my cache.

I can concentrate on learning, and doing what I can to make things better. The hard part is that I work an hour away. I leave home at 6:00 AM and get home at 5:30 or 6:00 in the evening. I'm finding it a bit hard to hit the books and continue learning code when the refrigerator is close by. Something about relaxing after work with a cold beer is just magical. Weekends are spent doing all the work I didn't have time for during the week. Things are settling down now, and I will make more time available. Now where did I put that refrigerator??

Like most choices, it's neither all good nor all bad. Having all S@H-only hosts go idle next Wednesday (as the BOINC defaults would do) would be a waste. OTOH, if all hosts were set to 10 day caches it would be disastrous. With luck staff would disable some of the servers before the whole system locked up and then put in some protective measure; what BOINC offers is a project config setting which simply limits the maximum number of tasks on each host. Then all hosts for which that limit was more than a 10 day cache would be unaffected but the most productive hosts would be severely limited. That's an impossible scenario of course, only a small fraction of users will even know about the new outage schedule and only some of those will react by increasing cache.

What any individual does to adapt to the changing circumstances is strictly their business, in my mind there's no blame unless they recommend that everyone else do the same and if that advice were widely accepted it would be harmful. A couple of years ago there was a user with one of the top hosts who was cherry-picking work by aborting what earned less credit per time on that host; I considered that slightly anti-social but not a heinous crime. I hope that some day BOINC will be mature enough to deliver the most suitable work to each host; I'd be very happy if Sten-Arne's ION would do the VHARs which cause my Willamette P4's DCF to increase by about 50%, for instance.

I appreciate what you said. I set mine as an experiment, and was quite supprised that it, or something worked. I don't know exactly how long it will last, but there is certainly a lot of work on my rig. I used to happily run a six day cache, and I don't mind reverting. I am hopeful that work will be available for everyone before and after the outage.
