I have a new computer and would like to continue running Seti. What do I need to do to download and keep my old statistics?

Since this account is active, just download BOINC, and when it asks if you are a new or have an account just give it the email you used for this account.

be aware that we have extended outages from tuesday to Friday so you may not get work immediately. You'll also experience periods of no up/downloads for the forseeable future

Hi Everyone,
Question, if one of my computers fail, and I put a new one on line, can I use the same computer name as the old one? Will it pick up where the old one was
left? Thanks Lonnie

Yes.

That depends. If you copy the entire BOINC data directory tree from the old computer to the new computer, and you tell the install that location during the install, then yes. Otherwise, no. BTW, if you do this, you need to stop BOINC on the old computer before the copy starts, and never restart BOINC on the old computer again.

Not without first moving or deleting the old BOINC data folder, anyway.

As long as the old computer using that name won't come back, sure.

You cannot have two computers of the same name on the same LAN at the same time (the DHCP server will get unhappy with you over that). I don't think BOINC cares that much about the computer name as each has a unique identifier.

It will if you have two identical computers with the same name, as then it's used to give the option to merge them.

I thought the computers could be either identical or have the same name, but both was not required. Also the two computers cannot have any overlap in project contacts.

I think if you have two computers with identical hardware and the same name that the merge option starts showing as the BOINC back-end will figure that it's the same computer, just one of them is with a newer hostID. Even if it's really two separate computers sitting there in your room.

As how else will the merge option show up when two identical computers are found in the list, with just two different hostIDs (one always being higher than the other)?

Originally, only identical machines (same OS and hardware) could be merged. Later by name was added as well.

If the two machines are actually distinct, they will not STAY merged, but after the second one connects they will split again.

Ok, all you fine people have answered my question on using a old name on a new computer. Now being a machinist and being real smart on the workings of a computer please answer this question....Most of my computers are Poweredge 1850's, with 512 to 1GB memory, how much faster would the servers be if I loaded them up on memory? 6-12 GB each. Thanks again for all your good advice.

The ones with the 64bit operating systems on them would speed up. if there are ones with 32bit OS, they won't use anything more than 3.5GB. For Seti it won't matter, as it uses 32MB per task.
