I'm not a fan of the big "cruncher farms", or wingmen with multiple gpus that run 1000+ WU caches that take 8 weeks to process and report while I have Pending WUs that are 3 and 4 months old, but I do see that many of the complaints Mark and others have raised are valid.

The recent software changes WERE handled poorly. There SHOULD have been some advance notice of what was being changed (and how and why), what effects we expected to see, so we could watch and report problems, and to avoid the unpleasant "Surprises" and the firestorm of complaints we saw here. To not do that was a very poor MANAGEMENT decision.

It was probably also a mistake to implement so many changes at once. I learned long ago, working with electronics and industrial controls that the more things you change, the more likely you are to have unexpected effects, cause additional problems, and make your troubleshooting that much more difficult.

I know that Matt, Eric, Jeff, and the rest work very hard keeping this project (and all the others they work on) up and running. But they could do a better job if they did just a little more to keep us Users in the loop, so we can HELP, and not be surprised/upset/angered when things don't go as expected.

For whatever reasons, we are all here because we WANT to be. We want to be a part of this, we want to help. We have knowledge, skills, and experience that could be more useful to the project if we know what is going on, what changes are coming.

We are here to help. Let us.

They are far too busy firefighting. DC computing is what it is, sometimes hit and miss, sometimes there and sometimes not. You take it or leave it as it is. If people spent as much time fighting global warming as they do here moaning about down time (not you), the planet would be a better place.

I'm back for just 2 weeks and seen nothing but trouble...

hahah, you and me both. I haven't crunched seti in maybe 3 years. but someone gave me a gtx 260, so I thought I'd give it a shot again. I think seti has crashed every day since I rejoined.

The KittyMan's leaving and comments like the above quote are saddening.
Reason being, I have also shut down my i7 because of recent events.
I've been doing this for 10 years, and the "fun factor" has taken a severe nose-dive in the past few years.

Was going to just wait it out, let the storm pass, etc etc, but I'm obviously not the only one feeling the dissatisfaction. So I'm leaving it off.

I just reached 500K and clocked 10 years.

That is awesome in my opinion, and a perfect time to print out the certificate and call it done.

We can´t stay away of the things that make our hearts beat faster, no matter what it is. Motocross, SETI, Johnnie Walker and Red Bull and girls are my problems. I don´t know the proper order. Can´t leave any of them without being depressed. And come back fast as soon as I can harder than before. No jokes LOL.

Almost done here.

hit 50K.. I will run it till 100K. I was going to shoot for my first 1 mil.

Got into the top 80% of crunchers in all time, top 20K of of RAC{boinc wide).

There is no respect for doing this within the project, and it means nothing outside of the project. But I will take it to 100K.

I hear people talking about 2 million people crunching. My nearest guess is that 1.8 million have stopped already. Most of the people I am passing have RAC of 0/0/0. Just guessing, but it seems under 200,000, perhaps 100,000 involved in BOINC over all currently.

It is just not worth being treated like this to accomplish more.

Quite the Achievement.

They have about 30K units to change my mind. I do not expect it.

The way i see it, the Seti team is under no obligation at all to keep us in work, or provide amusement for us. It's their project, they can run it as they see fit.

They aren't answerable to us, they don't owe us anything. If one doesn't want to crunch, there's always someone new to come along and replace them.

Yes, and that attitude explains the shrinking numbers of crunchers, the complete and total lack of treating this as a "production" project. And the utter contempt of anyone that does not kowtow to the whim.

We do not owe them anything. And they are throwing wrenches into finding ET.

Production project? I thought it was the Seti@home project. Run by Seti@Home staff. Staff who volounteer their time, for their passion. The same staff you expect to be awake and sitting there watching the servers 24 hours a day, regardless of anything else they may wish to do with their lives. Kowtow'ing to YOUR whim, and what YOU want.

The staff aren't here to serve YOUR needs.

If the servers go offline for a few days, is there nothing else you can do with your time other than sit there looking at the server status page?

Take a walk, go see a friend, call a family member and say g'day.

Yes, "production" project. If you look at the list in BOINC.. this project shows in PRODUCTION, as opposed to BETA or... as is more honest here. ALPHA testing.

You just chose a very bad time to join - bad luck to you.

If you feel so inclined, then I'd suggest you take a break for a month and come back then. Maybe you'll find a mostly working project, which is what happens most of the time - to the point that I don't recall the last outage of this length.

Still, you could have joined LHC. Welcome to a project that has work about as much as this project doesn't. LHC is (or at least was) in production too.
