The server is out of disk space, yes - but that's because the validators are off-line - and the validators are off-line because one was spotted trying to grant infinite credit to a WU! The staff took the validators off-line when that happened, until the problem can be diagnosed and fixed. Apparently something in the assimilators is dependent on the validators being online, so they aren't doing anything, either, even though they are on-line. (or at least read as online on the status page...) Once the validator problem is figured out, then normal (or what passes for normal at SETI... ;-) ) processing can resume. (once the backlog of work is cleared up, of course!)

I wonder what the WU used as a bribe?

Credits really don't matter to me, so I could have lived with that. Especially if it was my WU.

Hi Hiamps,

I did some investigation in to the SETI code to see what the WU kidnapper's wants are and soon discovered their shocking demand. "All your cats are belong to us," a clever modification of "All your base are belong to us."

You see, they meow have access to all SETI cat pictured profiles--- including yours. This means all feline pictured must deliver shown fur balls to the Berkeley SETI server room by 12 midnight tonight or the results will be catastrophic!! Seeing to how many "Puss in Boots" pics there are on these damn threads, I'm assuming we will lose half of our members.

"Insert sophisticated reply hee."

Keep crunchin'

Fascinating to think that all these units pending upload due to a simple-to-understand issue of server disk-space are sitting on our hard-drives.

A truly inspiring project. Even if my laptop will be dry during the coming night ;).

So It's "PROFESSIONAL" conduct to slight the volunteers and place blame on
poor equipment or insufficient help When its not functioning every other day

I think the only volunteers anybody is slighting are those that expect S@H to function more than every other day. The rest of us volunteers are happy to be here, and to help when we can.

Thanks perryjay for the reply. I did look back at this thread, but get a bit confused and very annoyed about the various post. I think the name of the game is patience here.........

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the update.

Hmmm, about other sources of income...

Have you considered writing a book about some of the things you do to keep up such complex servers. I'm sure there is material there that other sysadmins and IT support people would like to have to make their lives easier...

Thanks again,
Jay

My local fire dept is totally volunteer and they welcome all with a smile
no harassing the messenger, no pointing the blame, they just DO IT

Should Volunteers here expect any less

It's more than due time to really FIX the problems and STOP expanding
These "PROBLEMS" have gone on for month after month

Dare I say that is HARDLY professional

If these difficulties are causing you this much grief, as it does not seem to meet your standards of being 'professional', perhaps you should consider a 'green' alternative and switch the PCs off. Alternatively, if you can do a better job, you could always roll those sleeves up.

The one question I have about these people that post whining messages on these boards, sying that the sysadmins are unprofessional and that they owe us volunteers and should be keeping us informed of every little decisions they make, is how many of them work in IT and have any idea the scale of the task?
I've spent pratically my entire working career in IT support, ranging from global company's with multi-million pound IT budgets, down to small companies with second hand equipment.
Never, have I seen a project of this scale, supported by such a small team, with limited resources have such a high up-time.
To put things in perspective: whilst working for a multi-national logisitcs company, with a multi-million pound IT budget, we lost one of disk array's which bought the whole of the company's IT down for 2 days (our failover failed fo unknown reasons). The immediate fall out lasted for over a week as we repaired corrupted databases, bringing applications back on line etc, and got everything stable again. This was with 3 dedicated teams and about 40 people working round the clock.
To do what Matt, Eric and the rest are doing, with a few hand me down servers, and no money to upgrade is incredible, and people that have no idea how difficult it is keep a project like this just ticking over really shouldn't be moaning about the down time that is sometimes unavoidable. Or ask politely and someone would give them the answers and help them understand how difficult this is.
Rant over.......

Besides, if you complain too much they know where you live and just might get lost the next time you call them. :)

Who is the volunteer? You are! Eric etc. aren't, they are paid staff. When they aren't being paid, they don't work. What is the problem with this concept?

First, you and I are the volunteers here. Just do it, please. I'm doing it right now.

Second:

consequences of bad performance of volunteer fire department: death and destruction

consequences of bad performance of S@H project (I assume that is what you mean): well - uh - not much, really
