I'm developing a taste for Dutchy Original Organic Ale, apparently from Prince Chuck's personal dukedom. Very nice, but very expensive over here. Also a big fan of McEwans. But my all time favorites remain the Belgium Trappist types. |

Some of you mentioned Barley wine Barley wines I can remember Whitbread Gold label in the late 1960's, we used to order 1/2 pints of best bitter in pint glasses and mix in the barley wine -- it was LETHAL. Two and you fell over!! I well remember Barley Wine - it was treated almost, with reverance. Similarly, there was Worthington's White Shield....you always had to leave a bit in the bottom of the bottle, as it was an ale that 'conditioned' in the bottle. All that stuff, I know, because my father's best friend (conveniently) owned a Public House and was an ex-RAF 'Master Pilot'. Oddly enough, one of my father's work colleagues (again, a close friend?!) family, owned a beautiful old establishment in Cheltenham, Glos, and were also the former owners of the 'pub' featured in 'The Quiet Man' film from the 1950's. Yes, they were Irish. Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

I used to brew my own beer with mixed results. Most of the time it was great. But every now and again it would be pure crap. But one of my best batches I owe to a little spider. As most of you know cleanliness is paramount to a great batch of beer. Anything that's introduced into the batch that may contain some wild yeast, could produce some very off tasting beer. One night I was in the basement testing the gravity of the batch of Stout I had going, and I decided that it was nearly through. I went to replace my stopper when I noticed a spider on his web dangling half way into my glass fermenter. I couldn't reach him because he was on his way down into the beer. I panicked, and started to slowly pull on his web and begun pulling him out. He was almost out, when I guess he got spooked and dumped himself straight into the frothy batch of beer. At that point I decided if I tried to retrieve him, it would just introduce more bacteria. So I let him brew for a couple of days, and low and behold, it was THE BEST beer I've ever made. I couldn't keep my hands off the stuff, and after about 2 weeks it was gone. Damn, that stuff was good! (And potent too.) I named it "Spider Stout" figuring if he gave his life for my beer, he at least needed to have a name that would put him in the memory books! Another was my world famous "Old Al Ale" after it's maker. I perfected that recipe. |

Well, it's Saturday evening, yard work is not fun, and this Maredsous Triple, is really hitting the spot. Since there is a UFC tonight, I may be forced to sample some fine beer. Remembering the details of the fights may be difficult, but I'll remember which beers I drank. Maybe. :) I like this thread. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! I don't drink at all so you won't find me here often but I do have a story. Years ago we would attend trap shoots with some other people and when the shoot was over, one member of the group would provide the beer. It was my room mates turn so we went to the store and were about to pick up a case of Miller when my room mate noticed that another brand called something like Ballantine sold for about half the price. She picked up the case and off we went. After we were done shooting, we broke out the beer and the comments started. It seems it was the type of beer that kids would drink not because of the taste but because of the low cost and the alcohol content. The drank almost all of it but a complaint came with almost every can. I found that they did drink it sometimes when they were hunting and came back to the camp hot and dry. The first few cans were Ballantine and then after that they would switch to the good stuff. Needless to say, that was the last time we bough that brand. |
