I left because of all of the sniping. Very good comment there and perhaps that's why I too have given up offering my time to re-explain the same positive story to those that only 'appear' on the forums to offer their complaints. Nedd, sorry to see another familiar positive name disappear. Best to be happy and to just observe once in a while. After all, this is all for the 'fun' and for Science and to learn new things! Dear Ned, For what it's worth, as a "not-so-frequent-poster", I really did enjoy reading your comprehensive posts on technical subjects and I admire the way you continued to emphasize the positive side of Seti and Boinc. I do respect your decision to step back: although the majority of posters on this forum apply the same rules of respect and politeness as they do in real life, there is still a minority that believes that different rules apply once online. Wish you all the best Ned! |

You are certainly missed. I also got my Killawatt meter working properly. I know we had discussions on that. Good luck! Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

I left because of all of the sniping. All of the closed-minded, selfish bitching about problems, when people should marvel at how well BOINC processes work in a highly imperfect world. But mostly, I finally got fed up with people who are just plain mean to each other. We should be able to have a technical discussion without intentionally insulting people. It's about the ideas, not the personalities. Take any pair of forum members, and there is something that one of them can teach that the other does not know, and there is something that person can learn from the other. Some here do understand that. I've had it with the fact that one must write very carefully, because there are people who patrol the forums looking for a reason to get mad and tell someone off. If that made you angry, then yes, I'm talking about you. Lighten up. I don't know, but I suspect OzzFan left for very similar reasons. I only noticed this thread because I saw a PM from Blurf. I only logged in to change settings. He paraphrased what I said, and frankly, he was being too nice. You've heard the saying "it's not the heat, it's the humidity"? Well, it's not the hate, it's the stupidity. Look at every possible interpretation of every sentence, and pick the *least* offensive one, not the most offensive. You'll be a whole lot happier. I've been a whole lot happier the past six weeks, and my path to continued happiness does not lead through here. |

snipped..... and leave science to those who understand it. At least one of the physicists who formulated the laws of quantum physics has stated that "if you think you understand quantum physics then, you haven't thought about it enough and probably you don't understand" |

Hawking radiation does not refer to matter and anti matter. It refers to particles that have Mass and those that do not have Mass. Not antimatter. Particles that according to Hawking, Spring up out of nowhere (because if it didn't his hypothesis is rooted) and the particle of NEGATIVE mass( NOT ANTI - MATTER) Negative mass, is absorbed by the black hole. The particle of POSITIVE mass, is not accounted for. The NEGATIVE mass particle is vital to Hawking's theory that black holes' will evaporate. What happens to the particle with POSITIVE mass? Go talk about who's going to post message number 1,000,000, and leave science to those who understand it.

A sincere question. Hawking radiation accounts for the reduction of NEGATIVE mass particles... AFAIK, Hawking radiation consists of one half of matter/antimatter pairs. But since matter as well as antimatter has POSITIVE mass, I can't understand the question. Gruß, Gundolf |

A sincere question. Hawking radiation accounts for the reduction of NEGATIVE mass particles. Does it explain what happens to the Positive mass particles that escape the black hole? Good question. I will have to refresh my memory once I get home tonight, and I may be more able to answer your question. Off the top of my head, I must answer "I don't know". I will persure an answer later and get back to you. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

A sincere question. Hawking radiation accounts for the reduction of NEGATIVE mass particles. Does it explain what happens to the Positive mass particles that escape the black hole? Does the other 1/2 of what reduces the mass of the black hole add to the quantity of the black hole with no counter effects? That theory effectivly doubles mass. Because it's opponent is absorbed by the black hole. Edit: Shit, lost myself. 1/2 of Hawking radiation.i.e. the negative mass particle, is absorbed by the black hole. That means, there is a particle of POSITIVE mass, that's just doing it's thing out there.

And Steve, initially as a friend request, you opted to ask me as someone who has a genuine interest in Science. I have no intention of flaming you what so ever. I never will. If something I wrote was misconstrued, then I sincerly apologize. I meant no flame or anger at all. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. And Steve, initially as a friend request, you opted to ask me as someone who has a genuine interest in Science. I have one in the Science thread., Another Goodie. Direct your expertise there, not your attempts at flaming me. Fermi doesn't work on facts either. Neutron stars: I'm your daddy;) If you've got it upstairs, play your cards. One can only bluff intellect so far.

My world would, and was, in my past Seti incarnations (1st jan 2000) be a HOBBY, not an obsession. Something that people wouldn't miss my day to day abscence, as apparently happens here. Well I have to put my two pence in here. The above is the proverbial crock of raw sewage. The wife and I after 20 years togeher, Sure dont need to stare in each others eyes for 24/7, speaking of our undying love. And in my opinion thats not a healty relationship to be in anyway. We each like our own time apart. She has things she does, as do I. Just dont lump everyone on here with that statement. [/quote]Old James |

@Fayvitt: As with so many things, to much of anything can't be good.. a little of everything sounds much better. Try and find the mix in it all and try and keep anything from getting an obsession.. PS: with what I am reading I realise that I haven't been where you are/have been.. but "obsessiveness" is something I can relate to.. and the text above is something I (try to) adhere to.
