As already pointed out there are nowhere near 5,000,000 active clients - I believe the active figure is some 600,000

I you and any other crunching units are donating both physical resources, power etc. It is us who keep this project running and alive. Without us the salaried staff would not have salaries to draw.

Do not mistake a "non profit organisation" for an organisation which does not allow people to make a good, and in many cases, very good living from it. Please remember it is you and I that make that possible and as such we all own our small piece of the Seti at home business (which is what it is). I tjhink we therefore have some right to ask what is going on and to expect a true and honest answer.

Neither do the computer resources alocated to Seti by users around the globe contribute to the saving of a life. Are you suggesting we should only give our computer time to projects which would help to achieve this type of aims

My point is that developing a web-based application for 200,000 clients versus 5,000,000 has to be a lot easier . Did they plan the web-based application for 5,000,000 users. I think not. Thanks for your inpuut Homer. And your point is...?

Hi

What ever, its not important if there are 600.000 or 5.000.000 users.
The fact is nobody could known that so many users are switching over to Boinc so quick.
Just my two cents.

Have fun

Whether it's 5,000,000 subscribers or 600,000 or even 200,000 active clients: None is what I'd call "easy." Nor is it easy to accurately predict where the bottlenecks will occur when you scale from an 18,000 user beta to 200K or 600K active clients.

My point is that WU's started to dribble out at 04:00 PDT, I have a full queue to work on and I'm successfully able to return results. The team is working, apparently around the clock, and solving these hard problems.

As to the insinuation that these guys are making a "very good living from it" - You, sir, are a Troll.

Slimm, he meant me. Unfortunately he couldnt be bothered to read the post corrctly. I did not say that anybody at Seti is making a good living from it instead I am making the point that it is possible in "some not for profit orgs".

As to the guys at Seti - I dont know if they are or they arent. Do you?

The chill pill post was the best idea in this thread. Most of you are coming across as a bunch of whiny bitches. Let's see you design a DC project that goes off without any problems whatsoever.

My impression of what happened was that the memory chip was faulty which caused an enormous backlog of work to be done and this backlog ended up screwing over the rest of the system. Maybe I'm wrong about that but it seemed like there were no problems until they announced that their memory was faulty.

Re: Chill

Yeah, I think both sides of the POV have been pretty well aired.

I made a pretty strong post, and stand by my opinion. I also respect the opinions of those who disagreed with mine. Both sides of the issue appeared to be pretty passionate. I think this is a good thing. At least we all feel SAH2 is relatively important.

Well, looks like Berkeley has made some fairly good progress today. Very surprising to me, seeing as this is a Holiday weekend, and I'm familiar w/the university environment, 'cuz I did some research at Northwestern a few years back. I think this a very good sign of the proj team's/P.M.'s serious intent.

Let's move on, and get on w/some crunchin'!

Regards,

Strat

I've only received one wu since I started and I returned that on the 30th. It continues to say that the server has no work units to distribute. I run other DC programs so I'm not too worried about it and been doing seti since Jun 99 so I probably won't stop just because of some problems. I also won't go back to the "classic" because we need to move forward.

It's hard to say just how passionate I am about this program and I'd have to guess that most of us that crunch are the same in this area. The people who actually do the programming and do the background work must be just as passionate as us - Think about it. Would you put up with us? When the hardware goes down or the line is dead, do we blame the hardware or the people? How much injustice would you take? How much passion for their job must they have to take that much injustice and stick with it (regardless of any monetary compensation). My hat is off to all those behind the scenes and those that do the crunching. It will take us all to find ET. (whether we like it or not).

In every revolution, there is one man with a vision - be that one.

Here, here. That's what I like to hear. I'm with you, I think it's a good thing too, and all the better when you can have respect for someone with an opposing opinion.

Agreed, there was a dry spell of several days. But, since the first ones dribbled out early this morning (UTC -7), I've gotten my 5 day cache refilled and have gotten some WUs completed today replaced, too. No credit yet, but that'll come, I'm sure.

Maybe check your config?
