It would still be very nice if someone would keep us informed on what is going on and why.

Yes, it would be nice. It would also be nice if they did not have to work with second-hand and/or donated equipment, and could afford full-time 24/7 IT support. But that is not the case.

It may be that Matt, Eric, et. al. don't know any more than we do - that the server went down, and won't come back up. It could be that a management decision was taken, that since everything else seemed to be working all right, it was not worth paying the overtime for weekend work, so it will wait until Monday.

For the vast majority of us, crunching continues apace. We just won't see our results uploaded or get our credits until Monday or Tuesday. Or Wednesday, or......

GPU & CPU crunchers typically run out of work units quickly. I have only run out of work on one out of eight systems so far, I noticed this outage quickly used reschedule to transfer as my work over to the gpu as possible leaving the VLAR's for the cpu. Problem it that the person writing the code don't believe it is broken.

Folks.
Number 1: For the umpteenth This is NOT the forumn to report to report issues!
Number 2: Riding on a thread where news was posted two moths ago with issues other than what was posted is even more counter productive.

Same people, same posts, same reults. If you folks would stop jumping on these threads, maybe we would get more news.

Can you imagine that some folk that really bust their butts to keep stuff running most of their time also have a LIFE at a weekend that enables them to wind down and put up with the other stuff which happens when they are not there?

That's just crazy talk. Heh.

I'm not unbiased, but I give the staff kudos for what they've done and assign only the slightest of blame when things go wrong. Sure, if they stayed there 24/7, things might work smoother, until they snapped and killed everyone for wasting their lives away working for peanuts.

A long time ago, I set my cache abnormally high, like eight days or something. I don't even remember why. I always planned on changing it, but at times like these, I'm happy I didn't. Anyway, I'm still crunching, so I'm good.

The seti servers and Matt's stories remind me of my first attempt at putting version 1.0 of XP on an old system that had a raid HD controller.
'if you have a driver for whatever, insert in now'
hummmm... like 40 times I inserted that 3-1/2 disk.
24 hours later... I lost it...
I pressed the CD eject button and reliefed myself thru the door openning.
Take that you little piece of &%#@!!
In to the dumpster it went, leaking fluid the whole way.
Moral of the story.. every man has his limit.
Its mystifying YOU have not reached yours Matt.
Maybe this is the cause of 'posting restraint' we all are seeing?
Hey! When you guys retire that old server, maybe you can be as creative as I was? :)

May the Computer Gods be watching over you today and forever!

The .18 DL server is still not available.

I need to do the hosts trick for DL.

You're an unofficially Forum Mod?

Where we should info the SETI@home crew that there or here is a prob?
If you would read the threads, you would know that the Admins got interesting infos from the members.

If it's not allowed to post here probs, then an officially person (Admin) should say this. You don't think?

It shouldn't be necessary, it's just common sense.

This forum is for techincal news posts, and discussion about those posts.
Anything else should be posted in the appropriate forum.

If you had read this thread from the beginning you had seen this message 992795.
I guess if Matt wouldn't had found this interesting, he hadn't fixed the 2nd DL server.

I think.. these posts are 'off topic'.
Where do I report this?

Seriously...
I have the upmost respect for the guys that run SETI@Home.
I can hardly deal with the few systems I have running and the headaches they bring on.
Bickering here over whats right to post is... NOT RIGHT and Beyond off topic.. and shows no respect to each other OR the SETI Team.
This IS the technical news thread.. If Matt or Eric posts that server XYZ is running and the users are seeing that server XYZ is actually NOT running, It seems that this IS the best place to respond and let them know something has gone haywire.
