. . . @ Gundolf - i recenly saw a program on the HD Science Channel regarding the issues

you're referring to . . . iT was on Tme Travel & i believe it's also the article you refer to . . .

I didn't refer to a specific article. I've read Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes" and Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose's "The Nature of Space and Time" both several times, but the last time was some years ago. And I follow the cosmology articles in "Spektrum der Wissenschaft" (the German edition of "Scientific American"); that's all :-)

I tend to subscribe to what The Doctor, once said.....to paraphrase, beware of Homo Sapien.....run! There is little to recommend us, when you think about it.

And with Hawking radiation, has it ever been detected? Are there any viable experiments that can be used to detect the theory?

Another question, like the one above. Been searching fruitlessly for days now on the net for an answer. If a black hole is a singularity, as claimed and not a definable object, a point in another 'dimension' so to speak, why would a black hole form an accretion disk? Does a singularity spin? The theory doesn't seem to say so. Matter would fall directly, not circle. Gravity and orbits all involve spinning bodies, as everything in the universe seems to spin.

How does 'radiation' leak from within a black hole? The INESCAPABLE black hole? Catch a bus? Hitch a ride on the fastest thing in science, a beam of light? Shit, i forgot, light can't escape a black hole.

I've watched Hawking's Universe 1-6, Origin of the Universe, and atleast 1 dozen docs on black holes in the past few days. All i seem to see are a lot of unprovable, untestable theories. All are taken as fact, and i find it frustrating. The Origin of the Universe doco i thought was a huge laugh. Saying there are only 2 theories, his ideas and the God theory, therefore his must be correct. Hardly a comparison.

To be quite frank, it pi55e5 me off no end that because there is only 1 major theory at this time, that everyone blindly believes it must be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God. Based on little or no evidence, and untestable, unprovable theories.

I'm not looking to argue with anyone, just trying to understand something that doesn't make sense.

And don't start spouting Quantum Theory either. Basing the existance of Santa Claus on the fact that the Tooth Fairy overheard the Devil discussing Santa with the Easter Bunny.

This singularity thing has got my goat.

You are right with this being dificult to prove. Science is not the final answer, but is a constant search for the final answer. As data or our understanding increases, science changes to reflect that. Einstain tried to come up with his unufied field theory, but didn't want to accept quantum mechanics. With M theory, we have the first math that works with the very small and the very large. Everything else broke down as you approach infinity. Is it real? I don't know. I have never had a problem with answering "I don't know". It seems much better than to invent an answer. This stuff is complicated, and counter intuitive. The evidence points to things that don't make sense. It is just the best we have to work with at the moment. I'm sure things will become more clear, even if it takes centuries. For now, at least the math works, and only because so many have worked so hard on what can more easily define. You never build a pyramid by starting at the top. But if you construct a solid base, it will lead to the top.

i'm glad to see that the earth is still flat, men haven't flown much less walked on the moon, and horses are the main form of transportation.
new ideas are pesky things that should be ignored...unless you can be openminded.

Any alien life out there that is capable of determining that we exist, and/or capable of paying a visit, would be light years ahead of us technologically. In which case, they wouldn't be interested in this piddling little planet and it's miniscule mineral resources, or indeed in it's primitive indigenous population.

If they are there, they'll be giving us a miss ....

I'm inclined to agree.

Humans are a bunch of heathens...they would take one look, puke in their own mouths then run.

yeah i watched the show last night on the Discovery channel.
maybe they don't want to be heard.

Of course, they could have their own version of Prof. Hawking and are heeding his/her/its advice!
