The Climate Deniers have got really nasty:

Feel free to doubt climate change: just don't deny it

It was, by many accounts, the worst academic outrage of modern times. A host of emails, illegally obtained from the climate research unit at the University of East Anglia, "revealed" that researchers were manipulating data about global warming and were guilty of perpetrating "the worst scientific scandal of a generation". ...

Last week, however, ... pronounced that his research was robust and solid. Those hostile writers were largely silent. Given all the hot air they have vented over the affair, this is perhaps not surprising.

...it would be wrong to let last week's revelations pass without comment. Climate science, and science in general, has undoubtedly been harmed by the affair.

..."We know that carbon dioxide is a molecule that heats up the atmosphere," he says. "We also know we are pumping more and more of it into the atmosphere. Theory then says we should be observing a rise in global temperatures, and that indeed is what we see – thanks to research units like the CRU."

And here the story of the CRU and Phil Jones is illuminating in another way. Jones had been working for decades on the collection of data – from instrument measurements, tree rings (which reveal ancient weather variations) and other sources – that have provided clear evidence that global temperatures are higher now than they have been for several thousand years.

It should be noted that this work was begun long before climate change was considered a mainstream science and was carried out by Jones, a man working virtually on his own – scarcely a sign that he was part of a grand conspiracy involving thousands of others. ...

Climate sceptic wins landmark data victory 'for price of a stamp'

This week, the Belfast ecologist who collected most of the data, Professor Mike Baillie, described the ruling as "a staggering injustice ... We are the ones who [for 40 years] trudged miles over bogs and fields carrying chain saws. We prepared the samples and - using quite a lot of expertise and judgment – we measured the ring patterns. Each ring pattern therefore has strong claims to be our copyright. Now, for the price of a stamp, Keenan feels he is entitled to be given all this data."

Keenan revealed this week that he is launching a new assault. On Monday, he demanded the university also hand over emails that could reveal a three-year conspiracy to block his data request.

I think these comments sum up the Climate Deniers quite well:

There's also the fact that much climate change 'denial' has been originated by those with a vested interest in the fossil fuel status quo - I think the majority of it on the net is just so much astroturf, and those carried along by the pasted comments made by PR people

This is, of course, what it's always about.
Intimidation and harrassment.
There will at some point be an accusation fo fraud.
This is how they work.

Nasty stuff, and it's our one and only planet.

Martin

Thats insane that a non academic could demand your hard work in raw data and extrapolate out their own non scientific results that can be spread as if they really produced valid work

Worse than that, I think there is a very real concern of a lot of fraudulent FUD being spread around from 'conspiratorial interpretation' of the "Official Raw Data"...

That could then be used to discredit various important datasets even though they are rigorously accurate and valid.

It will also add to the claim that it is "all too complicated for anyone to possibly understand" silliness.

I'm very strongly in favour of the data being made available to genuine researchers and scrutinised to whatever detail might be needed. However, to give it to an uneducated conspiratorial crack-pot to fuel malicious slander is just silly.

I guess we'll be seeing a number of variants of Hoagland and Hubbard riding high on "Climate Conspiracies"...

Yet more dumbfounded FUD to add to continued procrastination.

All very silly.

Also, all very nasty for the unfortunate researches so targeted and victimised.

Martin

And now for an interesting turn-around:

Youtube video: Climate Change -- Those hacked e-mails

Now that the conspiracy theorists have blown off steam, it's time for a more sober analysis of those e-mails and what they mean. I can't go through all of them, there are far too many, and . So I've taken the two that seem to be getting conspiracy theorists most worked up -- Phil Jones's e-mail about "Mike's Nature trick" and Kevin Trenberth's e-mail about a "travesty." ...

How my YouTube channel is converting climate change sceptics

Scientific candour, not polar bears and submerged cities, has helped my channel, Potholer54, to 27,000 subscribers

... It means acknowledging that while sceptics like Christopher Monckton and Martin Durkin fabricate a lot of their facts, many environmental activists tend to exaggerate theirs.

Of course, the evidence clearly shows that the climate is changing, largely because of man-made gases. And the consequences are likely to be dire. But ...

Climate modeller Andrew Weaver launches libel action in Canada [against the National Post newspaper] for publishing 'grossly irresponsible falsehoods'

I just hope that the FUD and the procrastinations have not gone on for too long...

Martin
