Bluefin Tuna stocks are down 75% but the UN didn't see fit to place a ban on fishing. Seems Japan and China depend on it, but will just delay the economical impact of the ban by a couple years when there are none. Reminds me of the Lumber industry here in Washington. Instead of retraining they wanted to chop every last tree and then figure out what to do next.

Incredible. The Japanese and Chinese seem to be on a dangerously reckless game of brinkmanship!

The comments in this article are unanimously scathing:

Bluefin tuna fails to make UN's list of protected fish

Japan, Canada and scores of poor nations opposed the measure on the grounds that a ban would devastate fishing economies

Were those 'poor nations' bribed by the reckless wealth of the Japanese and Chinese?

There's some choice comments in the comments section:

Just wait for the economic devastation when there all gone.

You thought Canada might have learnt something from the overfishing of the Grand Banks.

Oil Tar Sands and now Tuna - Not a good record for Canada.

Hard to imagine anything more devastating for fishing economies reliant on bluefin than the collapse of bluefin stocks. Liars, imbeciles, either or both.

Is it possible that we could make notes of the names of the individual negotiators who make these objections? Have them writ large on the internet in order that people can despise them personally.

"Only following orders" is not a valid excuse.

Not good in any respect.

I think that rates very high on the scale of "stupid".

The big question is...What will these poor nations do in a few years when they can't catch enough fish? Then they will figure it out, why not now?

This makes for amazing reading:

Why Bluefin Tuna Talks Were Recipe for Disaster

And You May Have a Final Meal

The Times reported that at current fishing rates, the fish would be extinct within two years.

Criminally corrupt. There is no other description or excuse.

Unbelievable!

It looks like the Blue fin is going the way of the Atlantic Cod. Fished into unrecoverable levels.

The sad thing is all the fishermen fishing these out of the Sea will find something else to fish for or do....in a couple years.

George Monbiot gives good commentary on a parlous and corrupt event:

Bluefin tuna loses out simply because scarce fish make a profit

Idiots. Morons. Blockheads. Numbskulls. Nothing quite captures the mind-withering stupidity of what has just happened in Doha. Swayed by Japan and a number of other countries, some of them doubtless bought off in traditional fashion, the members of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) have decided not to protect the Atlantic bluefin tuna.

... the absence of a ban ensures that, after one or two more seasons of fishing at current levels, all the jobs and the entire industry are finished forever, along with the magnificent species that supported them. The insistence that the fishing can continue without consequences betrays Olympic-class denial, a flat refusal to look reality in the face.

... Behind all this lurks a simple calculation. ...

Nasty stuff.

I hope Sea Shepherd can make a difference in the Mediterranean.

What is really needed is for us all to vilify and nuke the politicos that have let this happen.

How most effectively to do that?

I hope Sea Shepherd can make a difference in the Mediterranean.

Are they going to start a war or are they going to fix the problem?

If they go to start a war to insure the bluefin all die, then they are part of the problem.

If they go and take their money and build bluefin fish farms, they could turn a handsome profit. An even bigger one if they start a rumor that wild caught fish are "dirty" while farm raised ones are clean. It isn't that hard to influence the man at Japan's sushi bar. You do need to know it is all about face. Make him have more face doing what you want and he'll rush to do it.

Let's see if the Sea Shepherd people are terrorists or part of the solution. Do they have more invested in racist hate or do they want to do the right thing and save a species?

I wonder if Sea Shepherd had not spent all that money on the Ady Gil and the Bob Barker if they would have had enough to do some loans to start some fish farms and do some good. Well, one thing with that route; the person behind Sea Shepherd wouldn't have gotten 15 minutes of fame.

Well in some Kenyan marine areas fish stock is increasing obviously, thanks to Somali pirates.
I heard already someone thinking loud: "If that is so, we perhaps should collect money to establish training camps for pirates ..."

Perhaps an alternative: You could check whether your supermarket / fish merchant / restaurant can show a certificate of Marine Stewardship Council for the fish products they offer.

The rank stupidity of Homo Sapien never ceases to amaze me. One can only feel that, when 'ET' pays an official visit, they may see the culling of the Human Race as an unpleasant reality, needed for the survival of greater numbers of creatures. I can see no reason for the nations who voted for the restrictions, not to implement a complete ban on the import, in any form, of Blue Fin Tuna. Perhaps those who voted against the proposal may wish to consider the rise of piracy around Somalia and why it has come about - over-fishing!

I'm sure they will intelligently do whatever they can in whatever way. All without endangering any of the stupid humans.

... bluefin fish farms ...

Unfortunately, fish farms are very wasteful and highly polluting. Very much more wild fish must be caught to replenish and feed the farmed fish than you get from the 'farming'. Examples from salmon fish farming are that they are also highly fertile for parasites and disease that then pollutes and infects all the other fish nearby or passing by. Including the wild fish that are supposedly being spared...

Much more effective and efficient is to leave the wild fish wild and fish a sustainable catch. Far more highly productive than the present senseless once-and-for-all rape-and-pillage to destruction.

Proud member of The Nature Conservancy, because they seek solutions, not headlines.

They appear to have no recent comment regarding the senseless crisis for tuna.

Are they doing anything?

Might as well farm everything and really screw nature. In the wild the weak die off and the healthy reproduce...In farming all pass their genes Healthy or not. If that works for you....

Looks like the Japanese are bribing the game again, this time to hunt whales closer to extinction. According to the Japanese, the whales are not "endangered enough"!

Truly incredible.

Sea Shepherd are on their way to try to save the Tuna:

Sea Shepherds Aim for Mediterranean Bluefin Tuna Poachers

... On May 1st, Sea Shepherd’s flag ship Steve Irwin left New York City for the Mediterranean and Operation Blue Rage, a campaign to stop a variety of illegal activities (poaching and extreme overfishing) that are seriously threatening the very existence of bluefin tuna.

[...]

Sea Shepherd Founder Captain Paul Watson is angry that the bluefin tuna crisis has gotten so out of hand. “The fishing industry is literally investing in the extinction of this species so that they can control the price by hoarding the entire supply of bluefin tuna in cold storage,” says Watson.

“This kind of greed cannot be allowed to continue.” ...

And now for some very clever high profile "battleship diplomacy":

Sea Shepherd to Focus On Responsible Intervention Against Bluefin Tuna Poachers

The bluefin tuna fishery in the Mediterranean opened at one minute after midnight today and will close on June 14th or earlier if the allowed quota is reached prior to that date. ...

Our job is to investigate, identify, and intervene against illegal fishing operations,” said Captain Paul Watson. “We are an anti-poaching organization and not a protest group.”

The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin is presently at Cannes in France awaiting orders to depart to engage poachers. Meanwhile, Sea Shepherd field agents are investigating and building up a case for intervention.

The arrival of the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin has motivated action by Greenpeace and by the French and Italian governments. ...

Meanwhile, potentially devastatingly across the globe:

USM scientists head out for bluefin tuna larvae

... The gulf and Mediterranean are the only places in the world where bluefin tuna spawn, and this is the height of spawning season in the Gulf of Mexico. ...

"This places the young larvae, I think, in a precarious position in respect to the location and magnitude of the spill," Franks said.

The species is already in a precarious position. It's considered overfished worldwide, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service, which says the record bluefin weighed nearly 1,500 pounds. Bluefin averaged 1,200 pounds in the 1970s, but now average 600 pounds, according to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. ...

This all gets even more senselessly stupid!

Nature: Pacific tuna population may crash at any time

... In the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, fishing has caused tuna populations to fall below 15% of their historical levels. Even so, an attempt this year to ban trade in the fish failed ...

... in the past few years, boats have begun targeting the tuna's spawning grounds.

This tactic increases catches, simultaneously making the stock seem bigger but damaging the fish's breeding capacity. "If things go on like this, the Pacific [bluefin] populations will be the first to collapse [before the Atlantic stock]," says Katsukawa.

Disgustingly STUPID!
