This is perfect for me to chime in on, as I too have had a few beers. My bedroom, with 1/5 hp chiller, 1250 watt possible computer system, makes the bedroom 6° F, warmer than the rest of the house. I do keep snakes, so the average temperature in the house year round is 78° F. The problem is that I love science, and will gladly drink lots of beer and spend thousands of dollars doing anything I can to help science. I will be crunching until I either die, or there is no more distrubeted computing. I just love doing this, but have limited myself to only one crunching computer. I call it "The Cruncher", which is hardly ogiginal, but just as there are a lot of Steves, Johns, and whatevers, I liked "The Cruncher". I am perfectly ready to max it out, and spend hundreds more in the summer with the air conditioning. Until the last WU is crunched! Burp! Excuse me. Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! well last year with my pc on and the six (yes six) hdd's in my room would get really hot, as from midday in summer it has full sun until the sun goes down,it gets very hot - to the point i am saving up for a air con unit! I have now got 1 x 1tb 2x 500gb discs in the pc, one of the 500's is used for backups ad set on a usb connection on the inside so after 20mins of non use it powers down and saves energy/heat. The PC is in a desk and it does already in the winter here gets hot, I am looking into ways of cooling it better. I have put something called a "aftercooling" into the machine so it will keep it cool i hope lol - it works by keeping the input and output fans running for ten minutes after you turn the machine off - pity it doesnt have a battery then you could unplug it! |

My heating switches off overnight anyway (timeswitch) and the house doesn't cool too much. Getting all the radiators "just so" again would be impossible. I would go with switching off the house heating. F.

Sat here having a few beers wondering, would it be cheaper to turn off the heating and in my bedroom and leave my laptop, and two PC's on all night rather than put the heating on tonight - parents are away and I dont really wanna leave the whole house heated or go around changing the radiator settings as dad has it "just how I like it" any thoughts . . . . |
