My RAC has gone stealth, to be sure. But my pendings have gone from about the 370 region pre-outage to over 500k right now......... So, I have some serious crunching going on. And......what the hell? I love my credits. But as long as the project itself survives...........that is the point, now isn't it? You all misunderstand me sometimes........I complain about why it couldn't work better than it does.........but I don't condemn the project. Get f'n real........this is a volunteer project. And a damned good worthy one. Kwithcherbichen about it............if you want to be here, stay.... If you want to leave, do so without making a fuss. Nobody would miss me after a couple of months either. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." Albert Einstein "With cats." kittyman

@SciManStev..... I see my RAC is dropping again. Last night I was finally loading some CPU work, but either it ran out, or my rig rebooted itself. I hate not being able to find out until I get home in about 6 hours. I have plenty of GPU work, but without the optimized apps, it is a bit slower. Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! @SciManStev..... Once I finally got to where I could crunch without so many other issues, I went from about 3500 to over 12,000 in 4 days. That's when the uploads went dark. Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

@SciManStev..... My 8 rigs heat the whole house.........just takes the proper ventilation. I bought just a half a tank of fuel oil this winter, as opposed to 3 or 4.... 250 gallons a fill, at 2.50 dollars a gallon........ You do the math. I was only telling you what I know to be true......an i7 OC'd with a single 290 also OC"d can do a lot more than what you are showing....... But the recent Seti downtimes have hampered the stats. Maybe you are doing better than I think. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." Albert Einstein "With cats." kittyman

That sounds great! I will try it once I get home, although it will now take 4 days to run down my cache. I see my RAC is finally rising again. The number of set backs since I started this has been huge, and I can't wait until all the pieces fall into place so I can "let her rip"! Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! @SciManStev..... You could run the optimised apps, if you use the Lunatics installer to install the CPU MB and Astropulse apps, and the Cuda app, (run the cache down first) then modify the app_info to use the Stock Cuda app instead of the optimised Cuda app, make sure you keep a copy of the original dll's so you can overwrite the Cuda 2.2 dll's, Claggy |

@SciManStev..... Well, I am OCed to just under 4.2 GHz, my GTX 295 is OCed to 664 MHz with shaders up somewhere where I forgot, but I can't run the optimized apps, because the GTX 295 chokes, and either sends back errors, blanks the screen and recovers, or causes a reboot. I have 2 GTX 480 cards on the way, which I am hoping will resolve the problem with choking cuda. The system I have does heat the room by 6° F over the rest of the house. I just couldn't justify running the AC in the middle of winter in New Hampshire. My system finally started downloading again last night, but I am still waiting for my RAC to start rising again. @SciManStev..... Hey buddy, you could almost triple your science with that rig if you bone up and OC the CPU and the GPU and start running the optimized apps for it.... If you want to save money, turn the heat off, close your bedroom door, and leave the PCs on. Make sure the PC fans are all running of course, to let the heat circulate as much as possible. Of course, the rest of the house will be cold the next morning. |

Sat here having a few beers wondering, would it be cheaper to turn off the heating and in my bedroom and leave my laptop, and two PC's on all night rather than put the heating on tonight - parents are away and I dont really wanna leave the whole house heated or go around changing the radiator settings as dad has it "just how I like it" So far for the winter I have saved $300 in electric costs. With the cost per KW higher & the electric bill showing colder average temps then last year the only conclusion I can come to is that the extra heat form the computers is enough to keep the extremely inefficient electric heat I have form kicking on as much. The question is, how is your house heated? If you are heating with electric radiant heaters, then you may as well stack up some old P4s and call them 100w fan heaters. 1,000w is 1,000w and 99.99% of the power going into a PC comes out as heat. So you may as well do some crunching with that power, and keep your room warm. If you have a cheaper energy source like a heat pump, natural gas or a wood burner, then it's going to cost a little more to turn that down and use your PCs. But if the weather is cold, then PC "waste" heat is not totally wasted. It's getting in to winter here, so I will dust off some old PCs and run them for more hours. Turn the gas heater down to low and still be warm. If you can turn off the whole house system, and heat your room with PCs, you are probably way ahead. Ian |

This is where I went wrong! I moved my home office a few years ago in to a log cabin at the top of the garden, so I'm now heating a cabin, by way of SETI, which is mostly otherwise unused at the moment. That heat ought to be within the house, so looking at moving the office into the spare bedroom and having the spare bedroom in the log cabin - although it all seems like an awful lot of work! |

I get about 30% of my heating from the running computers and other electronics in a 2000 sq' house ... about 80% of the house is climate controlled (the spare room is shut out) on the other token ... it costs approximately 15% more to cool my house in the summer than I save per month in the winter. |

My heating switches off overnight anyway (timeswitch) and the house doesn't cool too much. Getting all the radiators "just so" again would be impossible. I would go with switching off the house heating. My heating is natural gas, In the winter I'd leave the gas on, but now I'm turning the gas on only in the morning as I don't have a setback thermostat here and I've been told the heater is oversized for the mobile home anyway(2.5 tons for an 840sqft mobile home). Must not be doing something right...LOL I haven't turned the heat on in this room since I started running seti, but the overclocking adds the heat. Don't know which would be cheaper but my way is more fun...except during outages. Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... And no good credit hound!

I already have 2 120 mm fans in the side of the case blowing inward. They are cooling the R2E, but I also have a noise blocker 120 mm fan, blowing in across the 3 1 terabyte hard drives. The forth is separatly located, with a fan on the bottom, and is part of my RAID 1 setup. I finally fixed it so that I was not losing the top RAID drive every two weeks. I have read hundreds of posts, and learned so much, it has been total fun. My coolent temp at 4.2 GHz, and non optimized apps, is 53° F. My core temps are 145°F. I need an LN2 tank in the back yard. you want cooling? take the side off of the computer and put a 20 inch box fan there on high. seriously. the sides trap the heat in the summer... let your computer run free of constraints... (just have a can of compressed air handy for the dust bunny migration) |
