Okay folks, perhaps a few of you could help me out???
I'm looking for a reasonable mens watch. I'd prefer the cost to be less than NZ$200 (US$135).

My aviation watch has quite a bit of 'clutter' on it, so to speak, and although is useful when I was flying, it just isn't suitable as a general watch for me to wear.

Anyone got any good suggestions?

Preferences:
Must be analogue.
Black or dark blue face.
Circular face.
From a reputable brand. (SEIKO, Omega, Pierre Cardin)
Include a date calender.
Don't mind about material, can be leather, silver steel, gold steel, but not fully gold steel.
Not minimalistic, but not cluttered.

Hmmmm, less than £135? That'll rule out my father's old 60's Omega Sea Master, for certain! For that sort of money though, you can also include some of the Rotary range - one of my father's friends was an ex-RAF pilot and he always had Rotary watches, aside from a favourite Longines watch. You probably won't go far wrong with Seiko; I bought my brother one, 20 years ago and its still in perfect order (its an analogue, with small multi-function LCD digital display bar at the bottom of the dial). You could also consider Citizen Eco-Drives and Accurist, although you probably wouldn't want a Citizen like mine - or you might, but thats strictly your business! lol

My Tissot Touch has both an analog and a digital display, a barometer/altimeter very useful in hiking, a chronometer, a thermometer, an alarm and a compass. I paid it a million lira and now it costs about 500 euro. It is waterproof bit not for scuba diving.

In that price range you cannot go wrong with a Seiko. Just search for Seiko watches and go to the Seiko home page. They have a watch finder. Enter your price range $100-200 US and you will get a list of watches. Here is the one that I think fits your specifications. SGA 58

I have a Rolex, TAG/Heuer, Seiko and Citizens. The Citizens is junk, but the TAG and Seiko are good everyday watches. The TAG is a little out or your price range but find the Seiko is almost as good a watch.

I have a Seiko that was given to me in 1983. It has had 3 watch bands, 1 crystal, 1 cleaning, two back gaskets and I am not sure how many batteries but it is still running and is off by less than a second a day. I wear it day and night and only take it off to shower. My room mate has two - one for every day wear and one for dress.
Even if you have to pay a little more, it will be worth it over the long term. With a little care, it could be the last watch you need to buy.

I also have an aluminium Swatch bought for 50 euros after swimming with the Tissot Touch which did not like the salt water. It likes only snow.

Thanks everyone. Looks like everyone trusts Seiko. I went to a number of retailers in the city (not prepared to by a watch online - half of them are fakes). The Seiko's were all $300-$1000. Way outta' my price range. I found a good Lorus 9119 (brand owned by Seiko) watch for $120.

One day I'll save for a Bremont Alt1-Z. The same watch Bear Grylls wears. What a shame they're so expensive.

I used to buy cheaper Casio watches, but with loads of buttons and gadgets. The problems with a good quality watch that lasts and lasts is that I find myself looking at watch displays wishing my watch would hurry up and wear out.

I have always liked digital watches more.

My current one is a Casio Wave Captor.

I never have to set it as it syncs up with the atomic clock in Colorado every night. 2 years and still on the same battery.

After years of trying to find the "right watch", I quit wearing one a couple years ago.

As long as there is a signal, my cell phone gives me perfect local time.

I think of it as a 21st century pocket watch.
