I've got a Black Speck case for my iPhone 3G 16GB Black, which I bought a few months after the 3G version was released. I would NEVER forget to take it. It's definitely saved my iPhone from many broken endings.

I'll be looking to purchase the iPhone 4G when it is released this year. Hoping for a 5 megapixel camera, OLED screen, better battery life, multitasking.

But, an iPhone is not a myPhone without jailbroken software. I'm running 3.1.2 blackra1n. DO NOT upgrade to 3.1.3.

Unfortunately Verizon doesn't have the iPhone, so I got the next best thing, an HTC Droid Eris, nice little phone. I loved the iPhone, and if Verizon were to ever get it (probably won't happen anytime soon), I'd upgrade to it. But this phone does everything I need it to do, plus more that I have no clue about. Biggest thing I like is that I can tether my phone to my laptop and be able to still get on the internet.

Couple of my friends aren't able to tether theirs, so I don't know. I think you can find unlcoked iPhones, but I don't think iPhone's can be put on Verizon though, AT&T is GSM and Verizon is CDMA. I could be wrong, but I've never heard anyone here in the US using an iPhone on Verizon. Good info to know where you live, maybe I'll move there. LOL

Yeah, probably the same one's I was reading. AT&T and Apple probably came to an agreement that wasn't made public.

I'm waiting for iPhone 4G. Personally, I hope Apple incorporates an OLED or AMOLED display. They'd be able to slim down the thickness and make the battery life last alot longer.

Thank you for that Dr C.E.T.I. I considered an android and particularly the Nexus I which was superior in spec and easy enough to order by post from the USA to the UK, and pretty good value if you are lucky and the customs don't add tax on import. But it was better for me to buy something that is all working and I'm happy with what it turned out to be.

Hi Luke, the spec case is a good idea, but I now have an iPhone double thick with the Powerskin and now much too much a lump to fit in anything but a shopping bag ;)

Extra pixels and multitasking would definitely tempt me, but I don't really know what jailbreaking is or how to do it, apart from the fact that I can't use the spare capacity like a USB stick/disc or get at any of the files in the iPhone. At the end of my year on Pay-as-you-go I have my iPhone automatically unlocked (get it from Tesco if anyone is thinking about one in the UK). Maybe I'll be able to do something with it then.

Biggest thing I like is that I can access my PCs at home from a coffee shop in town (no PC on internet in sight) and check that they haven't run out of work or need whatever to stop them humming my electricty away, but not crunching for their livings.

I heard that Tmobile are one of the main outlets for iPhone in the States, but have not been contracted to supply iPhones in the UK. Possibly because their 3G network in the UK is pretty bad.

Okay, firstly, I'll say this now, you're screwed for the time being. Apple placed some really tricky stuff into 3.1.3 which wasn't announced publicly.

iPhone JBs (Jailbreaks) run off one of a few programs. Before 3.0 was released, I ran 2.x on a jailbreak referred to as 'QuickPWN for Windows'. When I upgraded to the 3.x line, I waited and waited and waited for a jailbreak for 3.x (basically, every new firmware release by Apple has to be re-jailbroken by the makers of the jailbreak).

I didn't bother JBing 3.0. 3.1 came out, and when a new Jailbreak came out, which is referred to as 'Blackra1n' (the current JB), I immediately took the opportunity to JB my iPhone again.

However, blackra1n only works with 3.1, 3.1.1, and 3.1.2. No 3.1.3 support YET. Usually, however, you could simply download a previous firmware and reinstall it on your iPhone, by going to any jailbreak community and downloading the applicable .ipsw file (usually 200-400MB in size, this is the iPhone OS). There are many different .ipsw files, all for different iPhones and firmwares.
Example:

iPhone3GS3.1.2.ipsw (firmware for iPhone 3GS - 3.1.2)
iPhone3G3.1.2.ipsw (firmware for iPhone 3G - 3.1.2)
iPhone3GS3.0.ipsw (firmware for iPhone 3G - 3.0)

Once downloaded, you'd connect your iPhone to the dock and (SHIFT) + click Restore, and it'd open a 'Find File' window, and you'd locate your .ipsw you want to install. Once you'd done that, and you click OK, iTunes would load your .ipsw file onto your iPhone. Taa Daa, previous firmware installed.

But, since 3.1.2, Apple has stopped signing the iPhone OS files, so there is no way of installing a previous firmware. (I don't fully understand this bit).

So for now, Ice, you're simply going to have to hold tight with 3.1.3. IF 3.1.4 or 3.2.0 is released, DO NOT upgrade automatically!

And to answer your questions about your apps. No, you will not lose any of you apps or application data when upgrading or JBing.
It is all stored in iTunes, so if you accidentally delete it, just sync it in from iTunes again. And even if you are unlucky enough to delete it in iTunes as well, IT will delete all your application data, but iTunes remembers your purchase, so just find the app and click "Buy" or "Purchase". iTunes will not charge you again.

And if you ever need to take it into an Apple store, to un-JB it, just click 'restore' in iTunes. It will delete your JB and leave no trace it was ever installed on the system.
