We've tried, many times before, but here's another go.

When a task is completed, two things happen.

First, a result file is uploaded to a data storage server at Berkeley.

Second, the task is reported to the database server as being ready for validation.

In order for validation to take place, both uploaded files have to be retrieved from the data storage server, transferred to the database server, and compared.

If they match, great. The science is accepted, and you get credit.

If they don't match, the validation is inconclusive, and the task gets sent out again.

If one or both of the data files cannot be found, you get your 'Validation error'.

The question is, why can't the data be found, when it's already been uploaded? Sometimes, it's because the user clicks 'update' too quickly, and the validator tries to access the file before the data storage server has finished all its housekeeping (indexing and so on). At other times - such as now, I suspect - it's because something's gone wrong in the network at Berkeley - the database server can't see all of the storage server, because of mounting or permission problems. My guess is that they will be checking for that sort of thing during maintenance today.

I saw an odd result last week....the poor guy had crunched it out on a P4 with a stock application and his result exactly matched mine - I was the No 3, or should that be _2? The result that was not even remotely similar, got the credit! In fairness, it did seem that it was sorted out a few days later. I suspect Richard is probably correct about the reason....my result was uploaded and updated by the BOINC software, itself (getting some petrol at the time).

Thanks Richard, for your kind explanation, didn't see any error code, but forgot the check the total FLOPS, needed to complete and validate.

Did read and got how the validation process, works.
I would be ashamed, if I hadn't read about the validation process, by now or didn't get it :)

Fortunatly, didn't see no error's, for today (March 3,2010).
Also got Reschedule, to work again, BOINC lost it's connection to local host, after a Reschedule. (BOINC 6.10.18/WIN XP64/CUDA 2.3)
