Message 974672 - Posted: 28 Feb 2010, 4:32:14 UTC - in response to Message 974653.

the aftershocks look just as fearsome as the initial trembler. I noticed that the 3 Chilean Olympic athletes went home early to help their family and friends at home. I hope some good news comes of in the next few days

A major tsunami warning is in effect for parts of Japan. Information about areas under watch and warning are available at the Japan Meteorological Agency warnings and advisories page.

Updates can also be heard on the NHK radio service.

Dear Quake-Catchers,

The Chilean M8.8 earthquake is yet another reminder of why we need to grow the Quake-Catcher Network. This past month we recorded quakes from magnitude 4.1 to 8.8 (we think). We have a trigger from the M8.8, but the power failed before the file could upload. We hope that our Chilean participant and his loved ones are safe and healthy. No word as of yet. Keep your fingers crossed. We hope to install sensors soon in Chile to catch large aftershocks. The large aftershocks can be hazardous to already damaged buildings.

Sincerely,
The QCN Team

==================================

QCN is not just for laptops with accelerometers, you can purchase (free for all K-12 teachers) a USB sensor.
The QCN workunit isn't "crunched" like other BOINC project's workunits, it just monitors the sensor and sends a periodic trickleup (to see what sensors are online) or is triggered by an event. It only uses 0.01 CPU, and it runs (monitors) just fine along with your other BOINC projects. On a quad core with a gtx295 with a USB sensor mounted to the floor--
I can run 7 BOINC tasks no problem...

Hello my friends!!!

First of all I want to thank all your concern on this tremendous Earthquake that affected more than 15 cities, practically half of my country. Despite the fact I stopped writing on SAH forums for a couple of years, I'm still impressed that you remember me.

I want to thank to all of you for your concern (especially on water supply) after the Earthquake. The magnitude on my city was of 8.2. Historical buildings are about to fall, and streets look like a post-war scene. Unfortunately since the damage was so strong in other cities, my city is somehow ignored by the media. Luckily my house was very resisting and water supply was normalized two days later.

Lastnight Chile ended a TV Telethon called "Chile ayuda a Chile" collecting $30.212.775.555 (CLP) and having an historical hug of our president Michelle Bachelet with the elect president Sebastian Piñera. A way to show that our country is united. (http://bit.ly/aUAkWj)

The worst part was not being able to communicate with my sister after the quake, telephone lines and electricity were gone. So we had to wait until dawn to see she and her son were ok. We listened to the news with my the radio option of my cellphone and then we used my brother's sollar cell to turn on a small and old radio. That encouraged me to learn about ham radios and perhaps become a radio amateur, but in order to do that I would need equipments and they seem to be too expensive!! LOL. I would like to learn more about Quake-Catchers as well.

After a week of this tragedy, we can see a united Chile, people are even returning the stolen equipments and they feel strong enough to reconstruct and create a better Chile. This is definitely one of the most life changing experiences.

Love you all,
Tiare Rivera.

I don't know Andres, is he the only one in Chile who has that sensor?? Chile is always having tectonic episodes, there should be at least 3: for northern, central and southern regions...

Hola
