Hawaii is getting gas and supplies and evacuating to higher ground as the wave is expected there at 4pm EST.

Sirens in Hawaii warn of possible tsunami

CNN wrote:
Asked by CNN affiliate KHON whether it was possible Hawaii wouldn't see any effect from the earthquake, McCreery said, "No, I wouldn't say that's possible at all. I think there's no chance we'll see no effect from this event.

"So people need to take this very seriously."

But he added, "We're not expecting this to be a worst-case scenario, but we are expecting ... dangerous waves coming on shore, and people need to take it very seriously."

Speaking of the evacuations, Shelly Ichishita, spokeswoman for the Civil Defense Division, said people in the evacuation zones -- basically coastal areas -- were "asked to go inland," she said. "We do not have evacuation shelters open."

Several tsunami waves have come ashore along the Chilean coast after the earthquake, which killed at least 122 people, U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Victor Sardina told CNN.

He said the largest was recorded at 9 feet near the quake's epicenter. Another wave, 7.7 feet hit the Chilean town of Talcahuano, according to Eric Lau of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Oops... New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense is warning of up to 1m waves along the entire New Zealand east coast.

Won't cause damage, but that'll certainly knock you over.

That's better than a wave that could be 3 to 4 times that in size, As Hawaii is in the waves sights and They have less than 1 hour before It hits, I hope everyone has evacuated who has to.

Honolulu faces West--
Hilo faces East...

The direction one faces doesn't matter with these type of waves, Tsunamis efficiently wrap around coastlines or any bodies of land that they meet.

I wouldn’t expect to see much of anything in Hawaii. In deep water, this will just be a little 2 or 3 foot ocean swell while normal tidal and weather forces produces much larger swells. (I’ve sailed small boats through swells as large as 30 ft without much trouble. Exciting, yeah, but not particularly dangerous.)

It is when these tsunami swells hit the shallow water of a continental shelf that things get ugly. Then, all the energy gets concentrated into one place.

Hawaii has no shelf around it so the raise in water levels will be less than the normal tide.

That's why I grabbed the Honolulu feed--
but I thought they could be more "powerful" facing the epicenter...

It is not so much which direction you are facing so much as wave height and wavelength. In Hawaii I wouldn't expect anything more exciting that watching the tide roll in.

[edit] In fact, if the initial estimates are right, it already passed Hawaii.

Just had a thought:

As has happened after the Haitian earthquake a few months ago, we will all be bombarded with requests for money for earthquake relief.

Which is good, just be careful which organizations you give money to. This sort of thing appeals to the scam artists and criminals who use it as a way to take money from folks who think that they are doing good.

Stick with long established relief agencies (personally, I recommend the UN, but that is just my bias) and look carefully into the creds of any organization before you had over your donation.
