Wouldn't you know it....
Just when things were looking up again, it would appear that I have lost the hard drive in the Frozen Nehi.
It had reported all it's completed work, had downloaded some new Cuda tasks when I left for work this morning, and was starting to chew away on them.

Rebooted a few times, and the IDE buss was locking up.
Thought it might have been the mobo, but tossed in a spare drive I have, and it booted and bios found that one. Put the old one back in place, and the bios won't find it.

I'll have to decide if I want to try the old trick of subbing the control board from the new drive onto the old one and see if I get lucky, or just put in the new drive and start from scratch....

More sighs from the kitties....

Meowwwwwwww.

First, get the new controller, then get Spinrite to rescue the data and move it to a new drive.

I put the little cockroach in the freezer for about 20 minutes, and then when I booted, I could hear a faint click from the drive every 3 or 4 seconds...
Does not look good.

And I really did not expect this....it's a Seagate ES series drive.

Now that it's warmed back up to room temperature, I can head a faint click click raspy raspy click click if I put me ear right up to it.

I think it's a goner.

Maybe I'll just have to try to put a positive spin on it and pretend I am building a brand new rig!!
Yeah....that's it!!

Right.......LOL.

I don't think swapping the control board is gonna save this one.
But maybe...the platters are spinning up.
I dunno....just pissed right now.

Gonna go to bed before I toss the thing out the front door.

I will probably order a couple of new drives air freight for Friday in case I DO decide to try the board swap and end up with two dead drives.

Looks like....'sorry wingys'.

"I could hear a faint click from the drive every 3 or 4 seconds..."

It's a paperweight...

Or a new fridge magnet, a shiny window decoration, and 25c of aluminium at the metal recyle depot.

Well you can upgrade to a 1, 1.5 or 2Tb drive. An excuse for a bigger/faster drive. Raid setup perhaps?

Well you did want a positive spin on it. LOL

Mark...feel your pain...some intelligent person hit a pole 2 nights ago in the snow...came to work and the work pharm was down, electricity went out about 7:30 PM for 40 minutes...restarted the pharm and my Q9450 HD was making an awful racket and wouldn't boot....let it spin up and warm up (it was about 50F in the back of the shop) and it came back alive...

If it happens again I am going to paperweight it and install x64 on that rig...

Backup anything you wanna save NOW...LOL.

I need to learn about RAID setups.
How many drives do I need to retain all data if one dies?

Do they all need to be identical drives?

Can I convert a current single drive setup (as in my daily driver) to a RAID config without reloading everything?

As the Frozen Nehi's HD apparently is a brick, I'll probably try to get it going this weekend from scratch with the new spare I have....
But I should look into RAID going forward.

That's a noise I got fed up of hearing myself, so I went raid mirror - and ironically haven't had a drive fail since LOL. It's almost as if it's laughing at me for spending the extra money raiding. If I hadn't done it though, you can bet the drive would have failed by now!

For my personal machines I have used RAID0 since whenever 60GB drives were "a big drive" & never had one fail while in this configuration.

I know this is a contrarian view, but I see a high correlation between RAID systems and drive failures.

Maybe it's just the idea that having five or six drives makes them more likely to fail.

... and I've had far more instances where I needed an old file back than the copy that would be faithfully reproduced across the RAID (even RAID 1).

What I tend to do instead is replicate important directories (or even complete drives) onto other drives on other systems.

That's particularly interesting for what you do Mark, because all you really need is the BOINC data directory to resurrect a machine on a new HD.

Well...
First things first...I gotta get the Frozen Nehi back up and crunching...and it's gonna be a long process.

But first I have a quandary.
I have two copies of XP x64. And I have forgotten which one was loaded on the Nehi and which one was loaded on the 920 rig.
Is there a place in XP on the 920 rig that I can view the key that was used for that install so I don't try to reuse that copy?
