I think that the problem is the same as some week ago: routing.
As before, I see some packet loss (22%) tracing boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu anf very high RTT (190).
It is a communication problem and I think that this is not a mystery.

My work unit buffer is set to ten days, and I have about 6 days left.

My 10 year SETI anniversary was a week ago :)

It will take a lot to get rid of me. LOL

Naw.

I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and it's not ET. My uploads have been backed up for more than a week and this isn't rare any more. Sadly, I foresee the day when I let my CPU cool and reduce me electric bill by uninstalling the client and turning off my computer when it's not being actively used. That day will probably be some time in 2010 if this trend continues.

I don't process other projects and have no interest in doing so. I came on board for SETI a long time a go and will shut off my clients (multiple) if the trend of more down than up time continues.

Regardless of what people profess, I am in it for the statistics. It's the only metric I have available to justify to effort.

I've been here 10 years doing this for S.E.T.I. and my computers don't know how to do anything else. I don't think I want to train them either. I'll stick it out here to the bitter end. Eric and Co. have worked hard for us over the years and I feel we owe them that.

The wonderful thing about science, especially long term science such as this project, is that it must be the goal that justifies the means, not the individual metrics.

Anyone else using statistics as a justification are only disallusioning themselves.

Your computers can run any BOINC project. This is the merit of the BOINC approach as opposed to the Folding@home approach. I am running 6 BOINC projects and I am never out of work.

so if they are having budget issues for this project, why dont they justpost that ?
I can donate a dollar or two (five, ten whatever).
I just find it strange that no-one seems to know anyone there that can either make the project aware of the issue or at least post that they are ware and working for a fix with xx hours or days etc.
my two cents

I'm sure they are aware of the problem. I'm also aware that technical folk, as our friends at S@H tend to be, don't like giving updates until things are finished. I know that I've given estimates on my completing a pc build, ran in to a few snags and doubled my actual work time. The best bet is to read the forums and keep abreast of things if and when they happen.

Also, they don't get paid well. Budget cuts from the state of California and limited resources keeps them busy and forces some imaginative fixes for problems. also note that they are in California and start their day around 9 am Pacific time. If you've been around a while you'll also note that the s@h servers go down around 9:30am on Tuesdays for their weekly downtime. Please allow them the time to work on the server/switch problems and we can get back to crunching when its solved

Isn't it about time somebody put a cap to this thread, and move the discourse to the NC board? I look here for news from the adminstrators and only find the user's frustrations.

Perhaps since Matt has bowed out of keeping a regular log of events, this board should be shut down totally because it is redundant with NC?

One would hope that there will be a new thread for the kvetching after the outage today.

I'm a diehard SETI cruncher. I prefer to run only SETI. BUT, but... I've taken to running MilkyWay when SETI is having problems, like now. Why? Because I now only use GPU's for crunching.

And I'm so used to paying the extra $100-per-month on my electric bill, that I'd likely fall over sideways with that extra $100 in my pocket. Or, I'd do something really stupid with that money... like bank it.

Anyway, bi*ching about the project's problems won't help. Donations, enough of them, will help. With well over 1-million participants in SETI... if everyone donated just $2.00, or the equivalent each year... SETI would probably have far fewer glitches and unexpected outages.

SETI, being an extremely popular project, requires much more from the equipment and bandwidth. We already know that bandwidth isn't up to what is really needed. And SETI operates on piecemeal, sub-par, equipment that's crammed into a tiny server closet without any backup cooling. When their A/C malfunctions, SETI goes down.

If SETI had the right equipment to operate on, that tiny server closet would not be adequate and they'd need a larger space with better cooling capacity.

So... all of the moaning and complaining does nothing to help SETI.

What can help is DONATIONS.... more of them... from more, or from all SETI participants.

I DONATE money to SETI@home.... DO YOU?

I'm just slowly BOINC'ing along.

WHAT A BUMMER.....

With two of my crunchers reporting WU's.... both reported every WU as.... SETI@home Message from server: Completed result xxxxxxxx.xx.x.xx.xx_x refused: result already reported as success

Almost 2000 WU's that I obviously won't get credit for...

I seem to be missing a smiley on the end of that one - please confirm that it was a joke? ;-)

Otherwise we'll have to lead you gently to Number Crunching and explain how BOINC works.

Why should I bother making any effort or spending any money on electricity if the project is not bothered enough to tell us what is going on for over three weeks. A great thank you for more than $5000 worth of electricity. Farther money will not be wasted.

Could the interest in the project's goals have anything to do with the electricity you use?

You chose to sign up for the project. I saw no contract that stated that as long as you pay your electric bill, the project owes you communications.

I'm sure I've spent far more than $5000 in the past 8 years, yet I'm not threatening to leave.

NOPE, Richard.... it's no joke... almost 2000 WU's reported that way. And I know that's not right.
