Because of the outages last year I made sure that my profile collected 6 days worth of WU to keep working when SETI is down. Ah. So this is where the network gurus are hanging out, is it? Here's a wireshark trace of a successful upload to get your teeth into, while I go and capture some failures to compare with it. (Direct link) |

The host '208.68.240.16' (known as setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu) has been found, and is reachable in 15 hops. The TTL value of packets received from it is 52.In general this route is reasonably quick, with hops responding on average within 133ms. However, all hops after hop 10 in network 'Hurricane Electric, Inc.' respond particularly slowly. The DNS lookup was completed almost instantaneously (less than 2ms - this may be the result of caching). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Hop | %Loss | IP Address | Node Name | Location | Tzone | ms | Graph | Network | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | 0 | | 192.168.1.33 | kar.local.lan | | | 0 | x | [Local Network] | | 1 | | 192.168.1.1 | - | | | 0 | x | [Local Network] | | 2 | | 192.168.153.1 | - | | | 58 | x- | [Local Network] | | 3 | | 81.46.56.98 | 98.Red-81-46-56.staticIP.rima-tde.net | (Spain) | | 58 | x- | Telefonica de Espana SAU | | 4 | | 84.16.10.77 | So7-0-0-0-grtmadad1.red.telefonica-wholesale.net.10.16.84.in-addr.arpa | Madrid, Spain | | 70 | x | Telefonica International Wholesale Network TIWS Infrastructure | | 5 | | 84.16.13.210 | Xe7-1-3-0-grtmadde2.red.telefonica-wholesale.net | Madrid, Spain | | 72 | x | Telefonica International Wholesale Network TIWS Infrastructure | | 6 | | 213.140.37.10 | So3-3-0-0-grtlontl3.red.telefonica-wholesale.net | London, UK | | 99 | x | Telefonica International Wholesale Network | | 7 | | 216.66.3.45 | gige-g4-12.core1.lon1.he.net | London, UK | | 97 | x | Hurricane Electric, Inc. | | 8 | | 72.52.92.241 | 10gigabitethernet4-4.core1.nyc4.he.net | New York, NY, USA | -05:00 | 175 | -x | Hurricane Electric, Inc. | | 9 | | 72.52.92.25 | 10gigabitethernet3-1.core1.sjc2.he.net | San Jose, CA, USA | -08:00 | 242 | x | Hurricane Electric, Inc. | | 10 | | 72.52.92.69 | 10gigabitethernet3-2.core1.pao1.he.net | Palo Alto, CA, USA | -08:00 | 244 | x | Hurricane Electric, Inc. | | 11 | | 64.71.140.42 | - | Berkeley, CA, USA | -08:00 | 241 | x | [Network for 64.71.140.42] | | 12 | | 208.68.243.254 | - | Berkeley, CA, USA | -08:00 | 247 | x | SETIATHOME | | 13 | | 208.68.240.16 | setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu | Berkeley, CA, USA | -08:00 | 248 | x- | SETIATHOME | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- austrian living in spain |

Simple failure - immediate backoff/retry: (Direct link) More complicated failure: connected, upload progress bar to 100%, then retry. (Direct link) (And if you want to know how I got that 'successful upload' trace - it was one of the new shorties I downloaded at lunchtime, first attempt. The other are from Thursday's batch, and have been round the block a few times already). |

I recently had a problem with an Internet phone provider when calling a specific area code. All other calls were fine. The service rep was more candid than he should have been for sure, but there was an auxiliary provider that was causing the problem. They just did not like handling the traffic. I think Hurricane Electric (the ape rant common denominator), like the aux provider in my case, needs some consultation. |

Hi Kaylie, I was just thinking myself maybe we should send this stuff to Hurricane Electric. Though I guess it might be better if Eric or Matt put them all together and spoke to them in person. :-) Wonder if they have a service department open on Saturdays? Hi Kaylie, Perhaps this would be too mean: Top News: Hurricane Electric Jams SETI Traffic Large Internet trafficker either doesn’t like or can’t handle the enthusiasm for small time, but very popular “Seti At Home†project. It’s been known that some internet traffickers interfere with specific traffic because they don’t like their competitors or just don’t think that the bandwidth is worth the trouble. They can, a simple software patch can jam up packets from or to anywhere. It’s been done before. Maybe the aliens are doing it! In any event, the provider is best to fix the problem before it becomes well known that they cannot transfer such small bursts of data. I was just going to post this on my Website and everywhere else I could think of, but, what does the staff think? (Probably not on a weekend) |

I wonder if everyone stopped pinging the system if there would be more bandwidth available? I wonder if everyone quit hitting update if there would be more bandwidth available? The sooner there is bandwidth the sooner it is fixed. |
