Message 966866 - Posted: 30 Jan 2010, 7:00:44 UTC - in response to Message 966851.

Our neighbors had a couple of Great Danes. One of them was about as smart as a fence post. He loved jumping over things. The day the sewer lines were dug into the street in the neighborhood, the dog jumped over the pile of dirt and discovered the hole on the way down into it. We found a ladder, and carried him up the ladder out of the hole. 2 hours later he did it again...

Sounds like He wanted to go for a tube ride. ;) LOL (pounds on floor hard)...

I suspect there are not as many good dog stories as there are kitty stories......

I have 4 cats and my dogs have many many more stories to tell....

But nobody wants to listen to a dog......

Meow.

I wouldn´t say so.
Dogs can be very loyal too.

With each crime and every kindness we birth our future.

For true...
I should not be so one-sided. Just my nature when I get on to a cause like the kitties......

We had doggins when I was a kid.....a silly little poodle, and a collie that was wonderful.

2 hours later he did it again...

They do catch on eventually. When our Cocker started to lose his sight, he went into the pool about 6 or 8 times, really not enjoying it, before he learned to go AROUND it. Every winter, when the pool cover gets buried in snow, he wanders out on to the cover 3 or 4 times and gets stuck (he can get down onto the frozen water, but can't get back up by himself). Eventually, along about mid-January, he starts going AROUND the pool again. 4 winters like that, and counting.

He's not dumb, he just needs to be reminded.

I consider myself a cat person. I type this with a cat in my lap. I have had many wonderful dogs too. I had one Malik, who was a timber wolf malamute mix. When I said stay he would stay until I let him go, even if it was hours, in the snow or rain. One thing I did hate when I took him fishing, he would always catch the first fish and the largest one too.

Nope they like "dogs" off the animals album but they also like Roger Waters Version...
Dogs

Then there's also the Post Waters Pink Floyd Dogs of War and This version that is probably better off in the political thread.

I have had the pleasure of having all sorts of animals in my life, and I have loved them all, but it is my dogs that are "top dog" in my life.
I don't think I could imagine a fulfilled life without them.

Sounds like you have had a few real friends...Huge difference between the dog that goes everywhere and the one tied up out back.

Max and Sadie, What's the cats name? Me I've never owned a dog, Borrowed one from My Nephew years ago when He was driving company trucks long distance when He wasn't married(My Brother & Me had to babysit Thelma a lot), His dog is a pit-bull Mix and Her name is Thelma, She's a sweet and playful dog, But of course built like a vault, Playing with Her means playing gentle as Her type likes to play and tug oh war is as about as aggressive as I'd get with Her, As She can tug(It's like playing with a pair of walking vise grips), If She gets close enough She'll lick one with Her tongue as She can be really enthusiastic.

I used to have a dog, she was a black flat golden retriever, her name was Gonzo. She was so intelligent, I could walk her without leash all the time, even on busy roads. We were really connected. Sometimes it seemed she knew all my thoughts and understood every emotion I had.
She died because her kidneys stopped working. I've had dogs after her but it was never the same, she was really unique.
So I agree completely: all dogs are not created equally!

Yeah, she was the best. Her name didn't come from the Muppet show though but from a music magazine we have over here, "Gonzo Circus"

Sounds like my Princess, she always knows when I need a little affection and she is also very good off leash. She follows me everywhere and would rather sit in the truck for a couple hours than stay at home without me. She even washes my cat JINX's face all the time, they are great friends. She has 4 cats that are hers.

Some kids from the Apartments out back decided they wanted to see our backyard a bit closer...I let the dogs out and you should have seen them fly back over the fence....Lets see a cat do that.
My dogs have big bark and no bite they will run from anything that stands up to them, but they sound good at night. 2 shelties and a Yorkie, LOL
The Raccoons have a great time teasing our dogs from the top of the fence but will also come down with the dogs. That really puts them in silent mode.

Hiamps last post reminds me of an interesting special on the Discovery Channel (or somebody like that) a few months ago about how and why we "got" cats and dogs. The theory went like this:

Dogs, being pack animals, were easily bribed with food into joining our pack, where they offered protection and detection that we wanted.

Cats ventured into early villages and farms following the rodents attracted to stored food. Some cats eventually tolerated humans, and hung around.

In short, we picked dogs, but cats picked us.

Actually modern house cats are a 3 way hybrid species not found in Nature, That consists of two desert species(from Africa, crossed by the Egyptians) that still exist today and one species of cat from eastern Europe. Oh and cat and dog DNA is related, But finding the fossil that they both diverged from is not all that easy(Damn elusive for most fossils, Sometimes finding one is part persistence and part dumb luck), But then the there's lots of ground for the fossils to hide in.

I think the special I watched mentioned something about how domestic cats are hybrids, like SJ described. To me the interesting thing was how those original species started to hang around with humans.
