I own and crunch via PC & Apple. No real bias as both have their strengths depending on user/application. However, this is somewhat of a head-scratcher to me. iPad 16GB Wi-Fi =$499.00 or Acer Aspire One Atom N450(1.66GHz) 10.1" 1GB Memory 160GB HDD Win7 Netbook for $299.99 Yeah, the Acer is only good for 8 hrs vs. 10 on iPad, but hey....iPad is $200 MORE, for miniscule on board storage and even less CPU power than Atom etc. iPad does look sweet, but IMO not much under the hood considering that this product STARTS at $499.00! Cupertino has been increasingly pushing the envelope on their value proposition between "exclusivity" and performance, but this seems to be a whole new level of less = more ;>) No thanks! I'll pass, get the netbook for a travel buddy, and put the $200 savings in "Branding" in my kid's college fund! Oh...and of course, I can crunch on the Netbook! :>) |

Well, for the next 4 weeks at least, the iPad will be a chick magnet, which makes it much cheaper than hair plugs and a convertible BMW. Netbooks took about 18 months to mature into their niche and overcome their inherent weaknesses. The "pad" sector will probably go a bit faster as Microsoft is poised with their offering -- so lets see what the features and prices are come XMas 2010. |

See my "Why I hate Apple" thread in Politics. It's the topic over there. I've already blogged about it if you follow the link. I thought you were trying to rest your hands... |

See my "Why I hate Apple" thread in Politics. It's the topic over there. I've already blogged about it if you follow the link. I am. And it's only 1 wrist. Typing with the other one is fine. Capitalising via shift is a bit of an annoyance though. - Luke. |

It seems to me that the whole point of this new Apple widget is that it isn't a Netbook. It's sort of like a big iPod with a screen that's more like the Kindle, but with a slicker interface. ... but I don't know that we'll know what it is until a bunch of folks get them and figure them out and finally tell us why they're so cool we have to have them. |

IMO the ipad is just a larger ipod touch. Where you can actually see the screen when watching a movie. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

I don't know, it looks kind of cool to me. I think I'll wait a year or two until the price on the gen-1 iPad drops into the sub-$200 range and pick one up for reading books. Hopefully it won't have the DRM crap that has kept me away from the Kindle. |

IMO the ipad is just a larger ipod touch. Where you can actually see the screen when watching a movie. I have a Touch (was a freebee) and that is also my initial impression re: iPad Sure, the big draw is likely the idea of a media device that can connect to internet wherever you have AT&T or Verizon network coverage, but wait....you can do THAT too w/ a laptop or netbook. Oh yeah, I forgot that Job's said that Apple doesn't know how to make a sub-$500 netbook that isn't a piece of crap. Interesting solution.....Just sell wicked-cool looking $500-$900 Jumbo-Touchs' instead that don't need storage, real CPU power or much versatility. Oh wait....you get iBooks. NOW I'm getting it! Uber-Touch + uber-Kindle + cell network internet connectivity ALL in a single 16GB 3G device starting at $629.00 so you can pay the phone company monthly for a data plan, and Apple for any movies, songs or books you want to own. Geeze, iPad is SOO much better than a piece of crap netbook after all. Only Jobs could have known ;>) I'm not worthy....... |

Geeze, iPad is SOO much better than a piece of crap netbook after all. I think the whole point is that this isn't a Netbook. It's something else. Does it fill a need? I have no idea. |

IMO the ipad is just a larger ipod touch. Where you can actually see the screen when watching a movie. But will the vonage application run on it? SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

Geeze, iPad is SOO much better than a piece of crap netbook after all. I agree completely Nedd. It's actually LESS yet costs more, and THATs what makes it 'something else' as they can do this because it has an Apple on it ;>) I'm having some fun w/ this. |

Geeze, iPad is SOO much better than a piece of crap netbook after all. I'd imagine that by next year we should be able to find standard netbooks that are tablet like. Which would make them more useful IMO. Actually if I could find one of those I'd buy it to replace my notebook that I bought just to run my car diagnostic software. netbooks that are tablet like An upcoming Oh-Ah item is a touch based netbook with no keyboard... rather, TWO screens (opens up same way, joins in the middle). |

I'd imagine that by next year we should be able to find standard netbooks that are tablet like. I type 70 words per minute. My handwriting is illegible. Why would I want a computer I could write on? |
