If you are getting a GTX 295 but only plan on having that one card in your machine you should look into getting 2 GTX275's. I believe you will get more bang and have more overclackable cards. Seems that the GTX 295 is 2 275's married together. Seems that a lot of people are having problems with the 295 and maybe 2 275's would be easier. Now if you plan on loading your machine up then get the 295. JMO

AFAIK, the old 2x PCB GTX295 are two GTX260-216.

The new 1x PCB, I don't know.


In past I asked me: 2x GTX295 or 4x GTX260-216 and took the last.
Because, for one year I read a lot of about.. The GPUs reach higher temps with GTX295, also much more noise to reach same temps like GTX260-216.
Also there were OCed GTX260-216 out, no GTX295.

Also I read about the probs of people with 9800GX2's (double GPU like GTX295) and they had latest after one year damaged GPUs..

And now, if I see the people with their probs with their GTX295 (2x PCB), I'm happy about my choice..

I guess the only way for people with 2x PCB GTX295, watercooling.

Even the modest ones can give some satisfacton :) After you grease that cheap sleeve bearings on the fan. As you see, is mandatory to have 512MB memory.

Will this be a decent board for the price?

Try looking for used via Craigslist. If you live near a big metro area and are patient, eventually something comparable to your needs and price will come along. Yes, craigslist is Buyer Beware.

Don't get sucked in too far. I know you want to help, and I admire you for that, but obviously crunching more uses more electricity, and if money is already tight...

Need to find out if anybody here is already using one. I have a Phenom 9850 quad-core @2.9Ghz and before I upgraded it from an 8600GTS to a 9800GTX+ it was like have 5 cores at the same speed. Not sure what the lower cards can do.

Please be sure you take into account all the extra costs.

16 CUDA cores (new).. nVIDIA name now the shader cores CUDA cores.. ;-)

So it have 16 shader cores or 2 CUDA cores (old)..
I wouldn't expect too much from this.

One of my 5 OCed GTX260-216 have a ~ 15,000 RAC, but have 216 shader/27 CUDA cores (old).

The 210 use max. 30.5 W, if CUDA then ~ 2/3 so ~ 20 W.

It's not easy to guess which RAC you could reach.. the specs are like a 8500 GT. Maybe you find in the top_host_list a PC with 210 or 8500 GT.

I would guess ~ 1,000 RAC.

If you follow the first URL, there are all GPUs which can CUDA.
If a very well performance/wattage ratio, I would go with the new 40nm GPU chip, 210/GT220/240 GPUs.

69 W max. - ~ 46 W CUDA - 96 shader cores - 12 CUDA cores (old) - maybe 5,000 RAC.

If I were you I would spring just a bit more into it and find a refurbished 9600GSO with the 96 cores, it is the only one worth getting. It made my old 3.06 do 5000 RAC. I believe I paid around $54.00.

I got the GTS 250, and am very happy with it, except for one small nit ---> it's the last of the line that WON'T run the GPU app for the Milkyway project. Something to do with CUDA 3.x. Of course, there was no way for me to know this at the time of purchase (5 months ago).

Sooo... if I had the money back and the decision to make over again, I would keep as many options open as possible and would make the effort to go just one notch higher to the 260 (and delay the purchase of a second card if necessary).

I've also got a GTS 250 with 1G (GDDR3) that will run the AP app ... I think.

However, my performance doesn't seem to approach 52 Aces ... but I am also using the latest drivers ... and my clock rate is a little slower.

I'd agree that you would probably be a lot happier if you go a notch or two up.
