Fred W, Thanks!

Jon, GPU#2 & ..#3 are still + 10 MHz shader.
'resultid=1476281148' Reported: 11 Jan 2010 14:53:07 UTC
But this is morning for you I guess.. where you live 'UTC/GMT' -xx:xx ?
I live current UTC + 01:00 (MET).

Fred, URL please!
I installed only the nVIDIA_driver. From the system tray icon/menu I can't see an option for to control fan speed.
Is there a possibility for to see also the chip temp (maybe also RAM/voltage transformer temps) of the graphic card (orig. nVIDIA softw.)?

EDIT: I disabled with help of msconfig the start of the nVIDIA system tray icon simultaneously with the Windows start. So it's not shown. Is there a possibility for to start this prog (fan control/temps) out of the program menu/or nVIDIA folder?

I'm in GMT -5...Indiana. driver 190.62 seems to be working for me!

I looked in your error overview and found a few..
So this driver isn't 100 %.

Hmm.. I saw your GPUs have very low free RAM.
Use Win7 so much GPU RAM (all 4 GPUs!)?

Before the CUDA_app will be loaded to the GPUs, you have only ~ 400 or ~ 200 MB free.
Example: 'resultid=1477352830' -> 208130048 -> ~ 200 MB free

All GPUs. This is too much. Compared to my WinXP.
Maybe it's possible to disable a few things in Win7, for to have more free GPU RAM? I think this isn't the prob because of the errors, but it look strange.

(Ahh.. I saw also a few errors, because of too low free GPU RAM, so the CUDA_app sent the WU to the CPU for to calculate -> Falling back to HOST CPU processing...)

O.K., it's WinXP, but I have on my GPU cruncher only the WinDesktop on GPU#1. The other 3 GPUs no WinDesktop enabled.
I guess this isn't possible with Win7.. or yes? Maybe then BOINC can't crunch on the other 3 GPUs?

Only for to understand correct..
In past with all stock (orig. SETI@home, no opt. apps) you had nVIDIA_driver_191.x and everything was well? Or you didn't looked to your PC overview on the SETI@home site for to look if you got errors?

Sorry - but, is Win7 so bad?

I'm sorry - I don't feel well, I say: 'Install opt. apps and your PC performance will increase.' BUT now, you have trouble with your PC.

Maybe it's possible to install WinXP? I don't know if a new nVIDIA_driver could make it better with Win7..

Additional..

If you have a CUDA error in the first few seconds (< 5 sec.), it's the opt._CUDA_app with VLARkill.
This function protect your GPUs for to calculate VLAR WUs (< 0.12 AR), which would make your whole system sluggish.
Example: 'resultid=1477089925'

Still have trouble. Not as many bad cudas but there are there. Sutaru is right, trouble started when the apps were installed the other day. Maybe it's not only the driver...I'm checking the other stuff Sutaru mentioned.

I checked and many have the cuda error after only 3 to 4 seconds. Do i get rid of the whole app or just this file?

Jon, What Saturu is saying is that the VLARKill is doing just what it was made for. You got a bunch of VLARs and it sent them back as a -6 error. Just check out the rest of the WUs to make sure they are all showing the -6 error.

Jon, I posted on the opt. crew site if they have little time for to look to your prob.
I guess soon we'll see their help here.

I'm out of ideas , sorry.
The easiest would be to install WinXP..

No, not really.

You have a few VLARkilled WUs, but also this strange errors.

If the opt._CUDA_app detect a AR WU < 0.12x, it'll stop the calculation immediately and report the SETI@home server a bad WU header (in BOINC < 5 sec. calculation error). This was the best way for to protect the GPUs for to calculate this VLAR WUs, which would make your whole system sluggish.

I notice that the top computers using 295's have win xp. I'm considering installing xp. New win7 drivers that work for the 295's are probally way in the future. I do have two smaller computers with winxp in them. The problem is I don't have win xp cd for them and their psu are only 265w. It's either two new psu for them or buy win xp cd...I'm leaning towards the win xp cd.

Jon, here is the thread.. the messages on the opt. crew board..

'Message 24344'

I don't know if it's true.
But maybe you could test if an old installation CD of WinXP work simultaneously also for a 2nd (new/other) PC.

I guess it don't hurt the 1st installed PC. (Microsoft don't make periodic control via Inet - and look to the WinXP IDs and compare?)

If you installed and the internet unlock of WinXP on the 2nd PC don't work, nobody hurts..

But, all (my hint) without warranty.. ;-)

Thank you Sutaru, i should have listened to you from the beginning and install win xp. Just bought win xp 64 bit on ebay, Newegg did not have xp 64 bit and they said will not get 64 bit. I stopped new work for this computer and just let it has now run out.

So I assume the 295 problem is in Windows 7 and not in the drivers? Maybe Service Pack 1 will have the fix? LOL

You are welcome!

There is only newegg in USA?

Hope you have good luck with ebay. You have well experiences with? I had read about bad experiences of others..

I hope your nice PC will give you with WinXP more fun!

I thought also to buy WinXP 64bit.. but it have 'only' ~ 5 % speed up compared with (my already installed) WinXP 32bit (with CPU WUs.)

In past the people made tests here.. and found..

  • WinXP 64bit (fast)
  • WinXP 32bit like WinVista 64bit
  • WinVista 32bit (slow)

Between the steps ~ 5 % speed difference.

I´m having the very same problem with my two i7s with GTXs 295 that use to run Win XP32 and now use Win7 x64. No matter what drivers or setup I use, there always a lot of errors on GPU#0. If not overclocked, the driver will fail and recover, but still ruining the processing unit.
If overclocked, CORE #0 will go in to 2d mode and won´t come back.
Following Sutaru´s tip, Im trying now to set the windows visual effects to BEST PERFORMANCE instead of best looking or auto setup. It seems its working now.
Using 190.38 Driver, PhysX disabled, Multi-GPU enabled, both cores overclocked.
3d setting/power management mode is set to prefer maximum performance on nvidia control panel. Will see if it can stay 24hr stable by tomorrow, but it´s looking good.

Problematic cards.
I never got the 2 PCB version working mostly continues errors on device 0.
Tried 3 of them, some worked for a week or so....
Send the all back, and got them back within the week, brand new 1 PCB version.
Now running 3 cards 24/7 for half a year XP 64 no problems there.

BTW.
You use display dummies with WinXP 64bit and your 2x GTX295 ?

AFAIK, WinVista need this that BOINC can use all GPU chips.

My WinXP 32bit don't need this with 4x GTX260-216.
