There used to be a fabulous comedy series starring Eddie Albert back in the 1960s called "Green Acres." You can find snippets from it on Youtube, it is guaranteed to evoke peals of laughter.
The old black and white films often contained a memorable plot, great suave acting, quality speech diction, flair and panache. Note how nowadays it is often reality television, police car chases, pyrotechnics, and verbal verbosity.

Yeah We was a riot, He's also a WWII Vet and Hero to 77 US Marines and so "He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for his actions during the invasion of Tarawa in November, 1943, when, as the pilot of a U.S. Coast Guard landing craft, he rescued 47 Marines who were stranded offshore (and supervised the rescue of 30 others), while under heavy enemy machine-gun fire." sadly He passed away back in 2005.

the original Twilight Zone. All the paranoia of 24 and the X files without the sex and swearing. Using ones own mind to scare us is better than showing all the gore.

Thought of a real series a bit before my time:
Victory at Sea

On a similar note, "The World at War".

Survivor
Life after Humans (Doco)
Summer Heights High

Plus a few movies:
Shawshank Redemption
National Treasure (I+II)
The Terminal

Oh definitely the Science channel and PBS/Nova. Can't see enough repeats of the programs that deal with physics.

A good start would be everything produced by Jack Webb, Irwin Allen, and Quinn Martin.

Now that I think of it, let's add two more creator/producers:

Stephen J. Cannell
Rockford Files
Baa Baa Black Sheep
Baretta

Donald P. Bellisario
Magnum, P.I.
Airwolf
Quantum Leap
JAG
NCIS
He was also writer/producer on Black Sheep Squadron and the original Battlestar Galactica.

Oh real good shows too, Dykestra I think won some sort of Award for the Original Battlestar Galactica too, I still don't like how the new remake ended.
