I’ll be brief, Tim, because others have gone into detail …

Correct, you obviously don’t get it.

I'll second the motion.

Motion carried.

UC Berkeley is one of those 3rd world campuses which occasionally is without electricity. This is usually related to the sacrifice of the black goat of Siddharta in which the entrails must be consumed by moonlight. However these days the problem is due to his Teutonic majesty, Arnold the Dark, who shuts off power to save money. At the moment there is no projection as to when UCB will connect to the Berkeley power grid and cease reliance upon smug power from SF.

Wow. I didn't realize that "his Teutonic magesty" was saving money by improving (increasing capacity) power distribution on campus.

Seems that making more power available would do the opposite.

It's not just about the money Ned. It's about power. And goat entrails.

As an aside, I've signed up for Milky Way, which every few days takes over my entire CPU capacity like some dark Teutonic über ap. As a result, SETI sits idle. This time, I totally missed all the power failures, invalid results, etc., but my CPUs kept on crunching. Milky Way has just returned to digital Valhalla for a rest, as it sometimes does, and SETI came right back.

Sorry, that's too subtle for me. The closest Google gets me is "Smurf Power", but that is probably not what you're talking about.

I was a set set and forget guy for 9 years. Then i found the boards. Thats when i first became impatient with all the outages. But reading the posts on here led me to the mellow path.
Im running 3 computers with a .75 day cache. Believe it or not even the i7 dosent often run out of work. Yes it did the last power outage. But i took the time and clean the dust bunnies out of it.
And i will say its my fault Seti goes down, every time my rac gets to 9000 it goes down, sorry:)

Now the world is funny and people are strange,
And man is a creature of constant change ...

The trouble with down time is:
a CPU cycle lost is a CPU cycle lost forever ...

The trouble with connecting to more projects is:
I feel I have cheated on my beloved - (SETI) ...

The trouble with discussions like this is:
it doesn't help me find a place to spend my cobblestones ...

yeesh!!

Have you tried the BOINC commissary?

From the last line of Matt_Giwer's post.....

I don't know what it is, but I wouldn't want to get close to it without a set of heavy rubber gloves.

Oh. THAT smug power. Well, after living in LA for 4 years, I am naturally suspicious of anything from SF.
