Since a few days the NC subforum is very quiet.

The forum Mods are in vacation/holidays?

Where are the people with knowledge?

I feel little bit as an inofficially Mod.

It's Xmas. Time to take a break from the forums and get do shopping/family time/friend time. I've set NNT and will shutdown here in a couple days. And I'm only a few k from my 1M credits milestone!

Few problems lately so it's a bit quite.

Come on over to Politics and Cafe SETI - it's rarely quite there and the drinks are free. Just don't forget to bring a gun or baseball bat with you :-)

I meant it in an other way..

Forum moderator, what is a forum mod?

What is the main job of a forum mod?

  • To read the messages if they're kind? To decide to hide?
  • To help people with their probs?

For my understanding, to help people if they have questions about the project.
I see mods very rarely in this way.

If I must decide who is a forum mod, I would give a test to the person before:

  • How to increase/decrease the WUs on my PC?
  • How to crunch only on 2 CPU-Cores on my QUAD-CPU?
  • I have a CPU with SSE2 extension, is there an opt. app for AP?
  • ..
    and so on..

If not in this way, I would give a mod a paper with the FAQ in the hand.

SETI@home, you need additional a mod, here I'm. ;-D

The only requirement of being a Mod is to review RedX complaints or search for violations on the forums. Some Mods even have additional responsibilities such as hardware or cash donations. Helping others is not a requirement, but most of us tend to do it anyway.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moderation

A moderator is there to moderate behaviour.

The rest of it is what forums are all about, sharing your knowledge.

Then the title Moderator have a different meaning in different languages.

In Germany a "Moderator" is a 'host?'_(US) of a show.
He accompanied the persons which look through the show.

I translated Moderator here with this same meaning.

I guess a lot of people thought/think the same way..

Sutaru, there is a difference between moderators and supporters.

Our job description is (as Ozz has pointed out) to keep the forums clean and friendly. Supporting is not our job. But we do, if we can.

Suggestion: You can ask Fred or Eric, to be our official computer supporter.

You are right. If i watch a talk show, the moderator is not a master of the discussed topic. He has only to lead the show.

But, he had read/informed about the topics which are shown/discussed in his show. To have knowledge about.

What's a computer supporter? What he do?

Call it what ever you want. Its a matter of your knowledge.

But, he had read/informed about the topics which are shown/discussed in his show. To have knowledge about.

But this does not makes him a specialist. Mostly he is only asking questions.
