I'm a complete linux newbie, but this thread convinced me that Knoppix was worth giving a try (particularly as I really want to have a go at cluster computing). I have managed to get boinc/seti running, it downloads WU's etc. but when I type commands into the konsole (eg. -run_cpu_benchmarks) nothing happens. Anybody know what I am doing wrong? am I entering commands in the wrong place? Any help would be appreciated! The problem was with the lines in "client_state.xml" refering to the proxy. In fact the Berkeley's Linux section wasnt very helpful for me - I found the answer here (thanks Paul D. Buck). I even found a client precompiled for AMD cpus here - Im still very beginner and I have to learn many more things before I compile my own client. Greetings :) |

I put some links into this thread to help/ answer some questions. 3. Linux may not really be faster unless specially compiled for your situation / machine / distro. Some guys here did put a recepie-link in one of the forum to specifically compile for more speed under linux. Greetings from Belgium ;-)))) |

Hi, nice Linux thread! :) I need help with BOINC on my new Slackware 10.0 box. First - Im very newbie in Linux, so please be patient reading it :) I cannot make my BOINC client connect to berkeley. Im behind a http proxy (FreeProxy on a Win2k machine) in a LAN. This proxy doesnt require authentication. First I added an environment variable "http_proxy": -=-=-=- export "http_proxy=192.168.xxx.xxx:portnumber" and I received error -113 from the BOINC client. After that I followed the instructions here and added the lines needed exactly as are written - I received error -113. I tried many variants including this one: [use_http_proxy] [proxy_server_name]192.168.xxx.xxx[/proxy_server_name] [proxy_server_port>xxxxx[/proxy_server_port] [/use_http_proxy] (the brackets are appropriate, of course) All of them doesnt work - error -113. Already have nightmares with this -113 - lol. What exactly I should do to make BOINC connect to the Berkeley servers? Thanks in advance. P.S. I am able to connect Internet with any browser trough this proxy simply adding the address and the port of the proxy in the preferences of the browser. |

Is linux really that much faster? Do you have to optimize to get benifits? I tried to get knoppix running, but could not get lan working. The dchp or whatever failed, then when I put I.P. in, my windows machine froze with a security error about ip broach.?? So I need help on just getting lan working.Couldn't find knoppix forum. @ Mr. arcturus : This info is very welcome thanks very much. I myself tried the distro UBUNTU on a live Cd. (See link in the thread). I've tried it out on a rather oldie (733MHz - Pentium / 256 MB mem / very small HD 1GB / old SIS AGP card). Had to do some fiddeling with the renewal frequency of the monitor but after that everything went reasonably straightforward... Recognition of ethernetcard without problems and immediate afterwards direct and automatic connection via the ADSL line. Nice desktop. I do like the Gnome environment... On the same machine I've tried Mepis Linux same remarks concerning the timing of the monitor... Connection with the internet went straightforward too. Other organisation of the desktop... If you like an empty uncluttered space UBUNTU could appeal to you. I eventually plan to enquire a permanent install for both packages to have a better comparison than the ones on the Live Cd's concerning speeds etc. Greetz ;-))))

Earlier in this thread I mentioned Mepis as my choice for linux distro's, specifically SimplyMepis 2004.03 with kernel 2.6.7. Live cd option, an intuitive interface, plus excellent hardware detection for my via kt333 box, nvidia graphics, with athlon XP2100+ running @ 2250 with built-in nic and soundcard. Straight out of the box I pulled the following seti benchmarks ... 2004-10-21 20:00:05 [---] Benchmark results: 2004-10-21 20:00:05 [---] Number of CPUs: 1 2004-10-21 20:00:05 [---] 1167 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 2004-10-21 20:00:05 [---] 2461 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU Then I ran across an excellent article on optimizing the boinc client specific to Athlon processors - http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?p=3076102&postcount=3 Following these instructions here are my new benchmarks ... 2004-10-21 20:45:16 [---] Benchmark results: 2004-10-21 20:45:16 [---] Number of CPUs: 1 2004-10-21 20:45:16 [---] 2122 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 2004-10-21 20:45:16 [---] 3049 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU One heck of an improvement! In WinXP I pull the following ... 2004-10-20 18:14:31 [---] 2148 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 2004-10-20 20:45:31 [---] 4920 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU Hopefully Whetstones are utilized more than the other but nevertheless it's nice to see an optimized linux client compete.

> Have a lot of fun! > I do have fun and time thanks, otherwise I would not be here. Thanks for the info, but I'm not a first time Linux user - I happened to be there long way before (round the late eighties with Yggdrasyl on a 80386)...This was practically a commandline version with X on top. I use(d) SUSE v9.1, RedHat, Caldera package, etc. we were really looking at something autostart from ONE Cd to be taken to every machine and up and running in a couple of minutes...on practical no harddrive or minimal harddrive. In my experience that is KNOPPIX for the moment. And yes I do build my own computers (you could say I build Ferrari's on demand), actually with the best ingredients at the lowest possible cost. Cost reduction is principally done by not bying any software. I did grew up years ago in a very techie environment (engineers department of the uni) where everything ran on UNIX... Greetings ;-))))
