heck NEZ might even crunch on a second account name without anyone knowing about it. He might even be among us without anyone even knowing about it

Oh, that's a given. I know I've seen that same photo before several weeks ago somewhere else in the boinc metaverse. Not that we all don't begin to look alike.

Not sure if others have seen this video from Fox news. Birdwell looks more like Big Bird (sorry, I'm allowed one cheap shot per month, and that was it).

Oh... be sure to freezeframe, and you'll see MSAttler's name go by...

Hi! ::waves::

Misfit might want to get a lawyer, because if there is a suit or criminal case, all his PM's are going to get read to a jury and he may well be the one reading them. Especially one about Nez starting up again soon, if I remember it right.

You mean my unpaid speeding ticket I got in Arizona 20 years ago will come back to haunt me? I got some sign language regarding that. Or will Zain be testifying what exactly is BOINC Synergy from all those invites I sent? They had better fly him first class. My fearless leader deserves nothing less.

It can be argued Nez got selfish & greedy (and is paying the price).

OMG.... How long it will be, what a perverted minds, ah?
Once more SETI@home is not about credits If for some of participants only credits are matters, maybe it's worth to keep this shame fact out from public and at least don't expand such approach on other participants, ah?
Nez did so much work == he is bigger credit hound ?!!! WTF!

Never read much Cafee threads before and never as far as I can remember posted here. Now I exactly know the reason: too much dirt in the posts!

Great story, I liked this part....

"One potential upside of the Niesluchowski case is that it might draw more people to look into the SETI program and potentially become involved, he said. Farber doesn't expect the situation to discourage people who are already involved in the project. "Anybody who is going to run SETI at all probably already knows enough about this field to sit back in astonishment" at the negative attention the situation is getting, he said."

Once more SETI@home is not about credits

Nez did so much work == he is bigger credit hound ?!!! WTF!

I never mentioned the word 'Credits.' I thought it was pretty selfish however to enlist thousands of machines intended for educational purposes into your personal itch project and greedy to affiliate them exclusively to a personal name instead of the underwriters. But since YOU brought up Credits, I think greed applies on that too, otherwise he could have:

-- created multiple accounts. He did not, he wanted 1 collector.
-- enlisted in multiple projects. He did not, he wanted no dillution of S@H

Now then, don't get me wrong, I feel horrible for the guy. He lost his job in a difficult time, and thx to the news & criminal probe, he's simply not employable in this or any other professional field. Step #1 before bringing someone in for an interview -- Google their name. He's toast, just as Birdwell probably wanted (probably such that she can later point to herself as a tenacious pork cutter when she goes for that next job). With or without S@H, sounds like she was gonna kneecap him one way or the other. Sadly, adding S@H into the mix gave the story feet.

Not quite properly. However, the mistake is not with regard to SETI:
Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, has spent tens of millions of dollars building the Allen Telescope Array, a group of satellites used in radio astronomy projects and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

Those are no satellites ;-)

Strange conclusions indeed.
Then, you can call "greedy" pretty many participants, I in their number too.
If I will have access to new PC I will:
1) install SETI under my own account, because it's much more easy to do this then to create new account. For what reason one will create multiple accounts at all ??? How using single accout can be attributed to greed?? Missed any logic here. [Actually, there is some perverted logic - for credit hound who envies for other's credits. But you rejected that your post was about credits - well, then there is NO logic. ]
2) install SETI cause it's the project I'm interesting in. For what reason one will participate in other projects if they don't attract this person?? And again, how it could be connected with "greed" word?? One can be called greedy just because he/she donates resourses only to project he/she likes and don't donate to others? What logic here?....

[
BTW, do you know that one of "super-computers" participates in Einstein@home?
Probably they should register different account for each node to be free from accusations in greed... Just nonsense...
And surely, join to each and every project in BOINC world, why they limited Einstein only. What a selfish behavior :P

Oh, so *HE* was only attracted by Seti... you almost had me convinced those 4700+ boxes were personally his ;-) They are not. You just don't put a personal itch project onto 4900 institutional machines -- it crosses the line so blatently, and yes, I read his side here. I'm still left to wonder why he did it in the first place. So since you know so much, maybe you can tell us why he seemed to act so independently before losing control of the situation (albeit, those consultants seemed to halt the train damn fast, not sure why Nez was unable to, he's clearly very sharp). Blinded by exuberance to be sure, but ultimately it comes down to a flawed word such as irresponsible, arrogant, or naive. Or selfish, or greedy.

Ultimately, S@H is a mere tangent to the case, Birdwell wanted him gone and simply put out as much supporting content as she could to achieve her goal. One day later, her new goal seems to be to renew her own contract ;-)

Now I am afraid that his own statements are somewhat incredulous.......

"The computer software program that aids in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and was downloaded throughout the Higley Unified School District was not Niesluchowski's fault, he maintains. He said "another employee inadvertently copied that program onto an image that was then copied onto other district computers."

He said he "disabled" the SETI@home program "long ago." However, "unbeknownst" to him, SETI@home "once again began to run on the computers" at four district schools.

The district has 4,947 computers, and the program was downloaded on most student and teacher computers, including new teacher laptops, Birdwell said.

Niesluchowski had been told previously by former Superintendent Joyce Lutrey to remove the software, but he never did, Birdwell said."

I repeat......

"unbeknownst" to him, SETI@home "once again began to run on the computers" at four district schools."

The head of IT did not know that a rogue program was running 24/7 on almost 5,000 computers under his watch????

Come on now, Brad.....who are you trying to kid here?

Message 36895 on Beta message boards.
We had a reply on the BOINC_alpha mailing list. David Anderson deliberately allowed self-validation, because otherwise NEZ would have no-one to validate with - he does such a high proportion of all the Beta work.

Let's keep in mind the reason NEZ joined Beta in the first place. Because on THIS project Matt Lebofsky asked for more Beta volunteers because the beta testing wasn't getting completed fast enough and THIS project was going to run out of work. So for all those who are complaining about Brad's WUs they wouldn't have any WUs to begin with if it weren't for Brad.

As for comments about Berkeley getting sued... how many times have I (we) heard that one before? We still are waiting for our day in court.

Yep! We do!

The current head of the SETI@home project said that participants are cautioned from using employee-owned computers. "Volunteer computing projects (and the BOINC installer) have stern warnings about not using computers without permission," said David Anderson, director of the SETI@home project. "It's unfortunate that NEZ chose to ignore these warnings. Hopefully, this example will dissuade others from doing anything like this." NEZ is the name that Niesluchowski, one of the highest-ranked SETI volunteers on record, uses online.

Oh shame on you, DA. You didn't use the word "allegedly". Do you have proof that he was crunching SETI without permission (and thereby making you a breaker of your own rules cuz you didn't want to lose him as a cruncher), or do you have the cashola to pay out if Brad can prove his case?

There is no information in his personnel record on why he was demoted in 2008. District officials provided the East Valley Tribune with his personnel record after it was requested. An administrative improvement plan was included from the 2005-06 school year.

Personnel records are confidential regardless if it's in the public or private sector. There's a civil suit right there.
