whats bad for Seti is that they demonize seti as much as the actual perpetrator. Perhaps a call from the seti/BOINC staff to the news sources telling them their rules that were clearly not followed.

Actually, a preemptive press release from Seti might be a very good move at this point.
It would clarify their position and possibly spin this into a little positive publicity.

Thats a sad story. NEZ has contributed a lot to Seti and Boinc but he has broken the main rule.

And, when i read this article close, he has abused his position.

Sad story. Very sad.

Monday, Don't jump to conclusions. Here is a post I left on the N/C forum.

Seems several people here are ready to hang Nez on the nearest tree. Remember we do not have the complete story. We have only heard from the current district administration and district attorney’s office. The only thing I have read that is incriminating is the fact that some of the school district’s hard ware was found at his home. And even that is not damming. He could have taken old stuff home to repair or it might have been surplus that he had purchased legitimately. I have a local school district computer on my desk right now. I bought it from the school district for $10. It’s an old iMac.

As far as running S@H and Boinc on school district computers, there are no facts as to what his actual authority was. Was he the person who made the call? Did he ask years ago and get a yes from a prior administration or prior boss? No facts. I totally agree with the rule that you don’t install software on other’s computers without permission. But things change. I was president of my company for over 10 years. I ran S@H and Boinc on all company computers. It was my call. Last year I was demoted when the founder’s son took over control. He has taken Boinc off of most computers in the company, leaving it up to individual users.

As for damages? I really don’t buy the argument that computers wear out because of running S@H or Boinc. In fact, I built 5 identical computers 3 years ago. Two of them are turned on and off during office hours. Three of them were on 24/7. The ones that have run 24/7 are still going strong. The two that were turned on and off have lost 4 of the 8 hard drives that had been installed. The turning on and off is harder on the computers than 24/7 operation.

The only real “loss” that the district has suffered is the electrical cost. But as already stated, the increased cost of electricity must be off set by the saving on hardware repairs and replacement.

I like everyone here am sad to hear about Nez. But is he really a bad guy, or just a convenient scapegoat that the district is using to lessen the impact of a shrinking budget? We don’t know.

If is was one or two computers I might buy he was taking them home to fix, but not eighteen. Even then he should have signed them out. If he bought them, then they would no longer be on the school district's list of equipment they own and are depreciating and Nez will have a receipt. I suspect that is why the school district used the word "stolen" to the media, who interestingly didn't change it to "allegedly stolen." Big libel suit if that doesn't turn out to be true.

My guess is the accounting department did an audit of the fixed assets and came up short big time.

Good lesson, if you take a pencil home you can get fired and even prosecuted for theft. Don't do it. Goes double if you paycheck is taxpayer's money.

I always ask before taking anything from work home and have never had a request refused. On the other hand, I have some company equipment at home that I would like to send back to work but it's stuck here taking up space.

Sorry, but you THOUGHT you were authorized. In reality, or rather in the law you are ALWAYS wrong, violating something.

Is your authorization in writing?
Is it signed? dated? notarized?
Are copies properly filed with proper people?
Is the signer the PROPER person to authorize?
Did the legal department concur in writing?
Is the material UNIQUELY identified in writing?
Is the location identified?
Is the material physically identified as company equipment?
Have you ever connected ANY non-company equipment to ANY company equipment? (power strip, mouse, display, power cable) Were you authorized in writing for that?

I once was refused ENTRANCE to work when I was carrying work equipment. The security guard could not uniquely match the material I had to a line item on the proper paperwork I had authorizing the movement. Why? The guards had recently been chided for not verifying paperwork matched equipment LEAVING the compound, so the guards were cracking down on everyone.

I worked for a defense contractor that had very strict rules about tape.

No magnetic tape could ever leave the building. No 9 track tapes, no casette tapes, no 8 tracks (yes, it was a while ago), nothing.

But when we moved from that facility to a different campus, we walked out of the building carrying the disk packs (yes, it was a while ago) and no one said a word.

They weren't tapes.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...
