This may become a case study for Obsessive Compulsive Disorders in a future issue of Psychology Today. I wonder how many WUs have been detached! |

I remember seeing his computer lists long ago... they were all identical machines and were generating around 300 cred/day avg, which led me to believe this (edu situation) was the case a year or two ago. It was just a matter of time... |

I dont feel sorry for him because he knew the risk he was taking. Make sure you either own or have WRITTEN permission to install and run seti/boinc. |

Looking at this article, I suspect that s@h is just an easy and very convenient scapegoat to lever him out for other 'problems'... Gilbert man loses job in case tied to alien-search software As usual, likely all very sad. I just hope the uneducated sensationalist gutter press don't drag Boinc and s@h into the dirt. Berkeley need to watch this one very carefully and prepare a rapid response if needed... They did claim their was missing equipment which would seem odd for a guy trying to run seti to steal stuff that could be used to run seti. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Berkeley has always made this very clear............ Quoted from a post by Ageless in the NC forum in a parallel thread............. "They already have that: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/info.php says: Run SETI@home only on authorized computers Run SETI@home only on computers that you own, or for which you have obtained the owner's permission. Some companies and schools have policies that prohibit using their computers for projects such as SETI@home. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Usage_rules says: Run BOINC only on authorized computers Run BOINC only on computers that you own, or for which you have obtained the owner's permission. Some companies and schools have policies that prohibit using their computers for BOINC-based projects. If you deliberately choose to ignore those rules, the consequences when found out are for you only. ____________ Jord" So, I think nobody could fault Berkeley for somebody that went rogue and intentionally installed their software on every computer he could get his hands on. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

whats bad for Seti is that they demonize seti as much as the actual perpetrator. Perhaps a call from the seti/BOINC staff to the news sources telling them their rules that were clearly not followed. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |
