Greetings fellow BOINCers, Well, it appears I have finally built me a decent BOINCing box, my WinXP Pro box. In just a matter of a day or 2 over 1 year, it has earned 300K credits. I would venture to guess that using an opt app might have something to do with that. While SETI is running without major outages, it will maintain 1100+ RAC. My next project is going to be to build me an Intel i7 BOINCer, which means that this box will have to be delegated to running Linux. I simply refuse to BUY another copy of Windoze. :) Keep on BOINCing...! CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. You can keep Windows on your old box, I won't tell Billy if you won't :p |

You can keep Windows on your old box, I won't tell Billy if you won't :p Greetings, But I don't WANT to keep Windoze on any old box. ;) I only have Winblows on one box simply because there is stuff that cannot run on Linux or cannot run well on Linux with Wine. I like Linux a whole lot better than Whinedows and not just because it is free. I can do most everything on it that I can do with Windoze, with but a few exceptions. I use a VR chat called IMVU. I tried it on Linux using Wine and it crashed after about 20 - 30 minutes. But hey! It did run! :) So, I'm stuck with IMVU on my Winblows box until the programmers can do a version for Linux. When MS releases (SELLS) a new version of Windoze (Like Win7), one needs to jump through hoops to make sure all their stuff works with it. Updated drivers need to be had, updated software, etc. And what's up with us XP users getting left out in the cold with NO upgrade to Win7? :( Linux upgrades? Not to worry. They will run on virtually anything. Most hardware drivers are proprietary and need to be updated by the hardware manufacturer. Before they are released for public consumption, the Linux gurus go over them with a fine toothed comb. They do their best to make sure updated drivers are not going to crash Linux. Before I had some weird hardware problem with an old P4 box, it had started with FreeBSD v6.0, I believe, and then I discovered Ubuntu. Every upgrade of Ubuntu, and then Kubuntu, I installed worked as it should, right out-o-the-box so-to-speak. The problem has since been fixed and I am running the latest and greatest version of Kubuntu, v9.10. Soon, I will be installing BOINC on it, again, and getting back to crunching SETI with it. Well, this got a bit off topic. Besides, I gotta get back to stuff I was doing before I came here to check posts. :) So, I'll catch ya later. Keep on BOINCing...! Greetings, Class of 1999-05-23, number of users: 943 Out of 943 users that signed up with SETI, on the same day as I did, I am at position #40 in total credit. Not sure how much of a milestone that is, but there it is. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. My first posting ever to a Milestone thread !! :-) Once they turn reporting back on, I'll be over the Million mark. It would have been sooner, but I lost 4 days when I was out of town during that Thanksgiving DNS flush issue. PS: #4 for my Join Date club. See you all here again at 2 million, when I'll be up to the #2 spot. |

Well, due to recent problems (I would guess) my dual GTX 260 has made it to position 15. I'm sure it won't last, but it's a milestone for me, anyway! I can't remember having a machine in the top 20 before now... -Dave |
