Hello,

Currently running BOINC v 6.10.17 and have received 'Computation error' for SETI@Home and Rosetta@Home. Error is displayed between 2 - 4 seconds for SETI and @ 52 seconds for Rosetta. CPU - GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 4] (1 processors) and OS Microsoft Windows XP Professional x86 Edition, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00). I have had no problem in uploading or downloading work.

Ideas or suggestions?

Thank you.

Hmmm your errors aren't showing up on the BOINC FAQ. Do you run the boinc/seti screensaver? I see what looks like a memory error as well. Try restarting and a memory test.

Is this with a GPU or a CPU?

Have your overclocked your computer?

Have you recently blown the dust bunnies out of the computer?

Have your checked to make certain it is not overheating?

Hello skildude and John,

skildude

Yes, I am running the Seti/Boinc screeensaver and I have restarted the computer. The error message seems to appear sporadically. I am waiting for a:

11/2/2009 1:46:49 PM rosetta@home Sending scheduler request: To report completed tasks.
11/2/2009 1:46:49 PM rosetta@home Reporting 1 completed tasks, not requesting new tasks
11/2/2009 1:46:54 PM rosetta@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
11/2/2009 1:46:59 PM SETI@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
11/2/2009 1:46:59 PM SETI@home Reporting 3 completed tasks, requesting new tasks
11/2/2009 1:47:04 PM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
11/2/2009 1:47:44 PM Milkyway@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
11/2/2009 1:47:44 PM Milkyway@home Requesting new tasks
11/2/2009 1:47:50 PM Milkyway@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server

to correct itself to see if the errors appear with new work.

John

Is this with a GPU or a CPU? CPU

Have your overclocked your computer? Nope, still factory specs with the exception of larger HD and added more RAM.

Have you recently blown the dust bunnies out of the computer? Most dust is out with the exception of what adheres to the boards.

Have your checked to make certain it is not overheating? I don't feel any heat and the CPU is in a well ventilated location.

You get these errors if BOINC is not allowed to connect to the internet (it no longer is allowed to pass through the firewall, or there's a proxy in the way all of a sudden).

"Illegal Instruction (0xc000001d) at address 0x00402818" means that you are trying to run an application built with instruction sets that are newer than the ones build into the CPU. For example, an optimized Seti application with SSE3, while the maximum the CPU can do is SSE2.

Hello Jord,

While I have a firewall, BOINC has permission to access the web at anytime, hence the work currently running.

No "Illegal Instruction (0xc000001d) at address 0x00402818" as you referenced is displayed in the BOINC Manager. There is a 'computation error' under Status on the Tasks tab, and this is only for those jobs completed in 2 - 4 sec (Seti) and 52 seconds (for rosetta@home).

I look at your Seti tasks list. When you click on the blue links for the Task ID you can see what I see: the stderr text that your computer sent back with the tasks.

You are using "Anonymous platform" as the application version, meaning that you must at some time have installed one of the Optimized Seti applications. You just installed the wrong one. A P4 2.4GHz CPU can at maximum probably do SSE, at best SSE2. But you can check that with CPU-Z. Download CPU-Z and run it, it'll tell you which Instructions your CPU can do. MMX, SSE etc.

You will then have to use the correct optimized Seti application. The Lunatics Unified Installer v0.2 will show which it can install, you just have to choose the correct applications.

So do not choose the SSE2 application if the maximum instructions your CPU can do is SSE. These applications are NOT backward compatible.

As for Rosetta@Home, your computer doesn't show it's doing any errors there.

You can use MMX, SSE or SSE2, but no higher. If you have installed an optimized application for some other OP set, you need to back that down to SSE or SSE2.

I downloaded and installed SSE and I am still experiencing the same problems.

Next step?

Thank you.

Message 944831 - Posted: 3 Nov 2009, 11:47:43 UTC - in response to Message 944773.

Did you exit BOINC, install the new optimized application and then restart BOINC?
Did you make sure BOINC was completely exited at the time (checked through Windows Task Manager)?

With the latest BOINC versions, just click BOINC Manager->File->Exit, the whole client and science applications will only stop when you check the option "Stop running science applications when exiting the manager" on the exit dialog. Else BOINC will continue to run and any changes you make at that time to the science application will be ignored.

If you didn't see the exit dialog, reopen BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Options, check "Enable Manager exit dialog?" and click OK, then go BOINC Manager->File->Exit.

In the Lunatics Unified Installer, you should at least check this option:

Click Next and let the software install the correct app_info.xml file and optimized executable.

Only then restart BOINC. If that still doesn't seem to fix it, try a reboot first. And if that doesn't fix it, your CPU may be damaged. You can then still run Seti on it, but not the optimized version.

To get rid of the optimized application, exit BOINC as I explained above.
Navigate to the Seti directory inside your BOINC Data directory with Windows Explorer.

If you installed BOINC in the default places, this directory will be at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\

Delete the app_info.xml file.
Restart BOINC (Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager).
Projects tab->Select Seti@Home->Click Reset->Click Yes.

The last step needs to be done to get rid of remnants of the Seti optimized application in the client_state.xml file, else BOINC will try to download the optimized app from Seti (and fail and fail and fail and fail and...)

Run some work (for as far as you can get it) through the normal Seti application. If that runs without problems, at least you're back in business.

Almost as if there are gremlins in the computer. I ensure I feed the hamsters running in the wheel but what does one feed gremlins?

It appears that this problem is fixed at this time and I want to thank everyone for their time and assistance.

it looks like your applications were install in a different file than what the BOINC project expected. I can only assume the files were moved. If it were only your Seti I could understand the app install not working but you are getting it from Rosetta as well.
