why do most people use an avatar picture that is not of themself?

my picture is really me. i see other users with avatars or weird people that is obviously not them, or things not even human or alive. i guess im just wondering why almost no one cares to actually show their mug on this forum. are you all ugly like me?

i hate to pick on ozzfan, but i can see why he has his avatar. it pertains to his user name. i have seen a few others like this. but why dont *^*most*^* people use a picture of themselves?

and if for whatever reason you dont want to have a self pic as you're avatar, would yous care to post a reply with a picture of youreself? im kind of curious as to what some of you look like. its be cool to put a face with some of those usernames.

But in some cases, so true. Personally, I wouldn't want to offend anyone with my own ugly mug. But the image I use for my avatar is something I generated myself.

It's a subset from the Mandlebrot set and was generated at some point on the second computer I ever owned. So while it isn't me, it's something with memories for me that lets me reminisce on "the good old days."

My mug is posted here and there but not on my Avatar. I like mine because no one seems to use a vivid red background. As a result it is very eazy for me to find my posts, the red avatar stands out.

I use my avatar to reflect my mood at the moment. Sometimes I am a real, well, female dog. Other times soft and sweet. (Those of you who know better. . . shush!)

At the moment I am “Whatevvverrrr”

Real me in my profile pic.

I have a picture of myself in my profile.

I would rather have a reflection of my state of mind or mood as the avatar on the forums.

Good question though because many people do not have an avatar at all!

I had the robot from lost in space, but that was pretty cheesy. So I now have a lilly that I grew myself. Some day if i ever find a picture of me that i like ill post it in my profile. If i really like it maybe as my avatar.

Let's see.

First, I'd have to find a picture of myself that I liked well enough.

For photos (your other thread) I'd normally put them on one of my servers, but that can be a little too traceable, and while I trust the people in the forums, I don't know much about the lurkers.

I do know that if I needed a spamtrap, I'd post an E-Mail address and that'd get spam within hours.

So, I'd have to figure out how to use one of the image hosting services, and I just don't care enough to do that.

Besides, is the avatar supposed to literally represent us, or is it supposed to say something about us? I took the photo I use as an avatar.
