Or is this a single box RAC achievement you're after

The honor is always in the single box performance. What else would be the point of building multi-GPU machines ? :-)

@martin's lighthouse:

Want to upgrade your 295? Get an Asus MARS Dual 285! 4GB, faster clocks, all around MORE than a 295

Hmm, have you seen them at newegg yet ? :) And, how WIDE are these cards ? If memory serves me they are slightly wider than 2 slots, so no 4 cards in one box.

No, I haven't seen them anywhere except in a couple of reviews.

A picture in the Guru3D review shows the card in a better profile (for my limited eyesight.) You are correct, the card looks much too wide for even a side-by-side setup, let alone a 4x configuration, in a standard case. OTOH, the TechPowerUp review called the design dual-slot. I think "dual-slot+" would have been a better description.

according to novatech the size of the mars edition is the same as a standard 295, and as they sell both i would hope they are correct...

Card Dimensions 10.5" (L) x 3.75" (W) x 1.5" (H) listed for both mars edition and standard single pcb asus 295. Could well be wrong though!

i am building a cruncher

Very cool & thx for the part specifics. A few questions:

(1) What speed cpu & will you overclock & how much ram ya going with? I was shocked that 4g can be had for about $99 now (times are a changin). I was also reading Tom's hardware, and they said that with Nitrogen cooling they were able to overclock an i7 to above 5 ghz (I know, the reliability guys just cringed).

You dont need to OC the CPU. The CPU is pretty much just feeding the Cuda Processors.

(2) Electricity aside, what will all the parts cost final (including drives, etc)

You are usually around $3000 plus...

(3) From the day you project enlist it, what do you estimate your peak RAC will be on that box within the first 30 days?

Good question.. While i am waiting for the rest of my watercooling, this machine already crunches with a i7 920 and 2x GTX 295 for 10 days now with a RAC of 22300 and climbing. However It will take at least 20+ days for the pending wu's to level out.

(4) What will you name it? I was gonna name my next system "WU-Man" just because of it's horrible sci-fi cliche value, but thought better of it ;-)

I name all my machines after stargate and stargate atlantis races. However, this machine is called astra_enigma until it is fully built

if you read everything it looks like a memory access/address error though I'm not sure what your post has to do with 4x 295 Cuda cards in one box.

Yes, it is a common error/bug when you use a 64bit OS. Restarting the client usually frees up the memory. Strangely, it mostly happens on tuesday after the outage.
But yes... off topic..

Boinc 6.6.36 will switch tasks witout freeing up GPU memory,
so when you get a task that gets pre-empted, CPU fallback mode will happen,
and each Cuda WU after the pre-empted WU will also run in CPU fallback mode,
untill you restart Boinc,

Or if you install Boinc 6.6.37, which fixes this issue.
