OMG..... A sad day for the kittyman indeed. One of my lifelong idols has passed on. CNN article Fox News article Gibson.com obit The inventor of the electric guitar, multitrack recording, and many other musical innovations. The Les Pulverizer... Les Paul has passed on at the age of 94. Those of you who have been around the Cafe much know that I have posted many clips of Les over the years, both with and without Mary Ford. And he pretty much played right up until the end, doing shows at the Iridium in his 90's. Les Paul...Chasing Sound. He was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, about 100 miles south of me. I shall miss him dearly. Kitty tears go here....... Rest in Peace, my dear friend. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

It’s truly a sad day for anyone who has ever owned, played or listened to tunes played on a Les Paul Guitar. I Desire Peace and Justice, Jim Scott (Mod-Ret.) |

I had the man in my thoughts all day long as I was at work. Now that I am home, I am youtubing some of the clips I have viewed many times, as well as a few new rehashes posted by folks in tribute to him. Still sniffing back a few kitty tears, but what a wonderful life he lived, and what a wonderful legacy he leaves us. Almost electrocuted himself once, and almost crippled in a car crash...after which he told the doctors to set his shattered arm in a 'guitar playing' position. Thankfully he survived those incidents to fulfill his wonderful destiny. Not many (if any) musicians, dead or alive, have impacted modern music to the extent that he has. How many guitaristas had a light start to burn in their hearts the first time they picked up a 'Les Paul'. I am still amazed at how many people I talked to today that only knew his name in reference to the guitar...and never knew the man who begot it. I always LOL when I watch the legendary Les Paul Coors commercial... "You play?" "I've been known to...." The look on the cowboy's face is always priceless. He is one of my first musical memories.....I hope I may meet him someday in the great beyond. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Ah yes, a great shame...years ago a friend of mine had a Gibson Les Paul Custom and would often play Beethoven's Fur Elise on it, just for me! Alas, he ended up writing music for adverts and the like. The Wizard of Waukesha, as he was known, if memory serves, also invented the 8 track tape recorder - the other primary mainstay for many a budding band. Probably of no consequence, but when I was in Automotive Engineering, we made parts for Waukesha engines and hardly anyone had ever heard of the place, but many had heard of Les Paul. Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

Not such a great shame to pass at 94 years of age, but a loss nonetheless. I guess, as the saying goes..... 'Each man owes one death, there are no exceptions.....'
