Message 925225 - Posted: 10 Aug 2009, 21:30:52 UTC

Happy new work week (for those with "standard" work week formation)! The weekend was rather quiet - no major outages or glitches. We burned through all the data we have on line for Astropulse, but still have plenty to process for multibeam. We do have at least a couple drives containing hot, fresh data coming up from Arecibo any day now. We're also hoping the amount of time ALFA gets to observe actually increases, or else we'll always continually be dangerously close to being, if not completely, out of data to process. As far as problems/concerns go, this is a good one.

I got the first rev of the daily cronjob running right now which creates an updated "top ten" candidate list (via the NTPCkr) to be parsed by some PHP for public consumption. It's running now, and taking a long time. I'll see how long it takes before making anything live, being as how we'd like to run this every day, but may be forced to pace it slower than that.

As for radar blanking, I'm finding the correlations still aren't clearly defining which is radar and which isn't. I'm going to talk to Dan about that shortly.

- Matt

Any idea what's up with the database on BOINC Dev, BOINC Wiki (not Trac though!), BOINC Alpha and CPlan, Matt? It's been down for a couple of hours now.

Its been down for a few hours. Was down for maintenance at 21:47bst, and by 04:32bst I was logging HTTP errors. Since Matt lives in a different time zone to me I guess I'll have to wait for Matt to surface later today for a resolution.

Uploads seem fine at this writing (0851 PDT), but the assimilators need a kick - they've been falling seriously behind since Sunday! — now at 1.3M "waiting for assimilation" and growing...

Uploads and Downloads look like they have maxed out again. As soon as the AP WU finish splitting it looks like it should improve a bit though we seem to be in the middle of a shortie storm. The Assimilators appear to have been offline since 8/10/2009. Matt as others have said please kick them or post a note in the Tech discussions thread today as to what is going on.

Because you haven't joined any other project, even as a backup?

Yes I would say something is wrong at your end, you seem to have 2 nearly identical quads

HERE

The first still has 2 tasks to return, and the second hasn't contacted SETI@Home since 2/8 and has 4 tasks to return.

My main machine is a quad that crunches 24/7 seti only, has a 1.5 day cache and hasn't run out of work yet. Currently has 23 2hr 36min wus to crunch, so possibly you need to check you settings.

At first it's like your cousin who only comes over to tell you how much you screwed up. You start to become ambivalent toward your cousin because nothing nice ever comes out of seeing him/her.

Then you start to realize that this is still a family member, and you devilishly figure out that if you screw up purposely, you at least get to see your cousin.

That's what we did. We stopped all the processes on the server just to see you come and visit us! :)

We sure don't see the Reverend very often.

Three posts in the past year, including today.

I always find his sermons of hope and patience to be so uplifting.

I haven't received any SETI units for several days and I certainly am glad that I have Rosetta running too.

I'm not a programmer, but the Electrical Engineer in me doesn't understand the constant problems that we experience with SETI.

Shouldn't be that tough to understand.

When you design a circuit, and it needs to be reliable, you choose components and designs with plenty of margin.

If your main goal is to do as much as possible at minimum cost, you can try to get by with less.

What you don't see in Electronics that you can do in software is exceed the load, and then build features into the software (the BOINC client) to mitigate the problems when you're running near (or just beyond) 100%.

As I write this, work is being produced, but just slightly slower than demand. I have a little bit of new work today, but it a back up is always a good idea.
