Nice.....HAMMER TIME !

So what you're saying is that you don't care about anybody else, you're just going to "hammer" the retry button until you force them all through?

No, not hammer - that was just a joke, as it's a 'hot button' for some ;)

I was able to get about 30 uploads through in that first half an hour after the server was turned back on. Now it's endless HTTP errors. I'll just let BOINC take care of it.

I know that allot off users just want to donate their CPU's and nothing extra. Just keep in mind if all active users transfer only 1 dollar or euro to Seti, server issues incl. bandwidth are gone!

I do not donate because one on one of these forums I was told to pay up or stop, on the basis that if I could afford to crunch I could afford to pay!

Such arrogance from a regular posted prevents me from donating.

Nicely put. Not to mention, that it's NOBODY'S BUSINESS what I spend my money on....and rather than have someone accuse me of crying because my 'EGO' machine can't upload, I would tell that person to quit covetting what I own and quit being jealous beacuse I can afford the finer things in life....or basically can afford WHAT I WANT and don't try punish those who can afford more than me.

PING: GRANT (SSSF)

Tommorow morning, I will be on my way to the local retailer to purchase 3 of these to run in a RAID 0 to replace my current (150GB x 3) VelociRaptors RAID 0 array, as my main Boot Volume.

Will be interesting to see how it performs.
Boot times & general use should be pretty much the same as the VelociRaptors (they are a very fast HDD). But for heavy database loads, it should leave the VelociRaptors way behind.

NB- Make sure that the SSDs you're getting do not use JMicron controllers. They're known for their very poor performance.

Damn. Just... damn.

At both of you. Damn at the "OMFG U HAVE EGO MACHINEZ" dude, because of the following points (Sorry hammer if any of mine overlap with yours)

Now I for one do not have any ego machines... yet. When I get up the Moola ladder (won't explain) to cash out a couple of grand, you bet I'll be buying an "ego machine" to take the rack space right above my video editing server. Moving on.

1. Jealous much?

2. Do you seriously think we get these machines to feel better of ourselves? To improve our self image? If that was not your thought, then you used the word ego in the wrong way. FAIL.

3. How we spend our money is none of your business. The economy sucks, so don't blame us for PUTTING OUR FAMILIES, OUR MORTGAGES, AND OUR LIVES before SETI.

4. If I donate one dollar, how am I sure that everyone else will? That dollar won't be able to help much. "w00t, a dollar, way to dig deep, Vistro." is what they would say, and I don't really blame them.

5. I have cheap and clever ways of getting a stupid amount of speed up that hill. Daisy-chaining wireless N repeaters, use PVC pipe to put the fiber in, etc. These people are surrounded by scholars; one of them will eventually have the CF bulb over their head flicker on. My point here is that there are many ways to achieve a desired outcome. Let's find the most cost effective one.

6. How much have you donated so far? Got proof?

7. Call it an Ego machine if you wish; the editing suite in my basement is pumping a WU out on average every 20 minutes or so (if I did my numbers right). It can upload just fine, and when it does not, I F*** DEAL WITH IT! I DON'T SIT AND CRY, AND I DON'T HAMMER THE BUTTON! THE THING KEEPS A 10 DAY CACHE, SO I CAN SURVIVE A LARGE AMOUNT OF UPLOAD PROBLEMS. WE ARE NOT PRIMITIVE PEOPLE! WE KNOW THAT THE SOFTWARE WILL DO IT'S JOB! WE ARE NOT WEEPING, WE ARE A LITTLE TORKED AT THE FACT THAT OUR "EGO MACHINES", WHICH ARE BURNING ELECTRICITY, ARE DOING NOTHING. IT'S NOT THE FACT THAT WE CAN'T GET OUR CREDITS UP, IT'S THE FACT THAT THESE MACHINES, EGO OR NOT, ARE WASTING ELECTRICITY AND NOT DOING ANYTHING WORTHWHILE FOR THAT WASTE OF ELECTRICITY.

8. WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO INSULT OUR PURCHASES? WE BOUGHT/BUILT A COMPUTER DEDICATED FOR SETI@HOME. SO WHAT? SHOULD I CALL THAT 50 INCH PLASMA IN YOUR LIVING ROOM AN EGO TELEVISION? WHAT ABOUT YOUR CAR? COMPENSATING FOR SOMETHING? MMM? IT WAS OUR MONEY, AND WE EARNED IT, SO WE WILL SPEND IT ON WHATEVER WE WANT! IT IS A BEAUTIFUL AMERICAN RIGHT! WHO ARE YOU TO COME IN AND INSULT US FOR EXERCISING OUR RIGHTS? SHUT UP AND LOOK AT YOUR OWN PURCHASE HISTORY.

ok I'm done ^^

EDIT: To elaborate on number 3, if I donate to SETI, I can never get that money back. If I buy a computer, I can sell the parts to EAT, KEEP THE LIGHTS ON, and STAY IN MY HOUSE!

OOoohhh.....I believe they do.

Many users have acknowledged this downside as well, but have been pleasantly surprised to find that these particular drives (Patriot Warp V2 32GB) perform and behave themselves dispite the fact, if ran on ICH10R onboard controller. I hope I do not end up being one of the negative 'statistics' though.....lol

AFAIK some manufacturers are using 2 JMicron controllers in an internal RAIDO in order to reduce the impact of their poor performance, but from memory they still lag other controllers.

To elaborate on my last post:

Not even half of the active users share all of these traits. Not even a third. Maybe not even a quarter.

1. Read these forums.

2. Trust SETI with their money.

3. Are in a giving mood.

4. Are in a financial position to give. Even one dollar. Banks don't care if you are one dollar short on your mortgage because you gave it to a charitable cause. Repo time!

5. Believe their dollar will help.

6. Are not already paranoid about credit card numbers and the internet.

Ah, found it.
An in depth run down on SSDs (a very long read but well worth it).
But in particular, a look at the problems of JMicron controllers.

If that is the case, then spending money on a dedicated cruncher or adding a new video card just for crunching isn't the smartest move.

The dedicated cruncher can be sold on ebay to pay for food.

After an incredible amount of devaluation.
Not a smart move.

Thanks for that. I will have a good read of that now and maybe change the gameplan a bit before shelling out any cash tomorrow......

Cheers.

You still get SOME cash back!

You can't just ask for a cash donation back.

EDIT: And the video card is tax deductable, for the adobe products we use for our trade run on CUDA for fast rendering.

Vistro and Grant....you both seem to be decent guys. There is no sense in arguing amongst yourselves.

If you want someone to argue with, pick on Ned.....he's always looking for a reason to post about how Seti@Home can accomplish much with very little and blah blah....LOL

.....just kidding Ned....smile ;)
