Amazing RAC on that VIC. I'd love to see how you modded it to fit those 260s in it :-)

Do You have the name of the manufacturer that builds the PCIe backplane for the External Video Cards?

Your missing the overclocked speed.
And I bet if you check again you'll find you actually have TWO (2) 8-bit math co-processors!!

LOL! I actually came across a Vic-20 @a yard sale 3 weeks ago. Had a floppy & cassette drive also. All three in boxes w/ all original manuals. He wanted $115 for all. (no monitor).
Unit was clean as a whistle. Claimed it worked, offered to let me take it home & try before paying.

Was SOOOO tempted as a novelty since I used one in computer lab in Jr. High.

Then I thought...."what the heck would I do with it???? ".
Not like I'm going to write BASIC to use it. God knows I don't remember much of THAT any more, or Pascal for that matter.

So, $115 for a vintage novelty paper weight.
Practicality won out in the end.

Would have been a nice specimen for someone's PC collection, however.

My first home computer that the folks bought for me when I was 8 or 9 was a Vic-20 (26-27 years ago now, as I am 35...lol)......aahh, memories.... ;)

Unfortunately, I doubt that it would be as fast as my current '8 Core Vic-20' that I am using right now.... ;)

I'm still trying to figure out how to get my Apple IIe to run BOINC.

If they were not at bandwidth/server limits now. I'd like to see a BOINC app for my phone. :D

I remain unconvinced that it will ever work well.

1) No math co processor. This makes the processing for math intensive projects thousands of times slower for the same clock speed.
2) Lower clock speed than for desktop or lap top computers.
3) Drastic reduction in clock speed if the user is not active at the keyboard.
4) No cooling.

Is it really worth the bother to attempt for a general cruncher?

To get any kind of speed, the phone will have to be kept "active" and that kills battery life. There may be a very few specialist applications where a phone makes some kind of sense. I really doubt that any of the CPU intensive projects fall in this category.

I doubt a phone could get much of a RAC, but the idea here is that there is a lot of processing power out there in what is a ubiquitous device. Each phone is fairly worthless as a cruncher, but there are many phones.

The BOINCOID developers talk of crunching only when on the charger.

That's neat that they are working on something. Unless they make some kind of JAVA version I don't think I'd be able to run it tho. That would really give a whole new meaning to trying to contact ET I think. lol

I would like to see how the 369Mhz ARM11 processor in my Nokia 3610 would actually do. I don't think my older phones with just a few mb of internal memory would work for such a task, but the smart phones that run windows might be able to do something.

Really given the resources I'd try to run applications on the processor in my microwave.

Exactly so. The phrase "horses for courses" comes to mind.

And beware... There may be some very high performance DSP circuitry in a phone that may be subverted to do more general processing.

Is there not some project somewhere utilising the DSP chips on PC sound cards?!

There must be lots of potentially neat Boinc projects possible for engaging bored commuters trapped on trains and buses and public transport queues...

A Boinc-oid Boinc project to tap into the combined real-world wisdom of the denizens of the Clapham omnibus?

But also note, the java/Android porting of Boinc may well get used far beyond just mobile phones.

I think the idea is very forward thinking & now is actually a good time for the early legwork and development, especially re: Java. This will take some time & we have a little yet before hardware can use it effectively. New process tech @ 32nm & 28nm promise a renaissance of sorts for handhelds in CPU processing power and power-savings. 22nm processors are only a couple of years away.
We should also see some quite powerful GPU engines integrated into handhelds at these process nodes.
There are also some new battery tech w/ 20-50% better power-densities we should see in mass over the next couple of years. It's no wonder we seeing a "race" of sorts by companies that see integrated hand-held computing, media and phone as a far larger future market opportunity than net-pc, or consumer laptop even. Case in point that 2 years ago, laptop went with me for every day I traveled.
Now, I'll use hand-held for short 1-2 day trips and leave lap-top in office.

I think aps that are able to run via graphics engine on upcoming handhelds could deliver surprising performance and still accommodate hand-held power limits. Processing while charging (especially overnight) is a brilliant idea if the battery can handle the increased charge-discharge cycles.

EVen if a Java port of BOINC arrives, the next question is "who" will be able port the Seti applications to Android or Java? ATI & Brook+ are providing sufficient challenges for Lunatics devs ATM. Not sure how well CUDA & Java can/will play together though some work is underway with jCUDA HERE

Fun stuff! Glad to see these efforts underway and current work continue in this direction regardless.
