Well,

let´s see what´s happening on this instead of crunching for nuts as the last days.

Matt,

Maybe a starting place to look: When the new 4.05 program is downloaded, a 5MB debug file is also downloaded (as part of the package?) Anyway, if 4.05 was compiled with a debug switch option enabled, it could cause a longer "crunch time".

So, make an Official - "Unofficial" page ...

Seriously, I suggested this before, and you either missed it or are ignoring me ... (Is one leg longer now cause I been pulling on it so hard?)

Make a technical log page where you dash off notes like this ... that allows the accumulation of notes like what was in the old technical news ... most importantly, even small notes, like, mounted 23 tapes for splitters, checked log files, etc. lets those of us that are tryiing to tell people that you do more than sit in the lab and laugh at the posts in these threads ... (tho why we are now talking about clothes escapes me ...).

On my machine the increase has been 2 hours from 4:22 to 6:22. From what I've read on the boards all users running 4.05 have had a similar type increase.

Some have speculated that some part of the debug code may have been left on.

Matt, I apreciate your thoughts It is helpfull...

We still need some info on what to do with our finished uploads. If the team members are on vacaition this could kill this project for quite some time.

Please find the person who is responsible for this part and have them give us some direction.....

More thoughts:

1. Increase in WU time... Hrrrmrmmrmmm.. I don't do any of the science/client development so I have no idea what changed from version to version. Of course the people who would know are both on vacation right now. I'll poke around. I do know that in the classic SETI home there would always be a public freakout when we released new versions that only contained non-science fixes. People would go nuts saying the new version is taking twice as long, etc., when in fact it did not. So I am a bit biased from dealing with this for years.

2. I should make clear that I'm not dealing with the file upload fixes, just reporting about them. Once again, my knowledge is limited on this front, and purposefully so - I have plenty other things to worry about (like getting a new replica database back up and running).

Matt, I crunched over a hundred WU's on my laptop at 2.5 to 3 hours per WU. There were a few "quick one's" that took a minute or so, but none over 3.5 hours. As soon as I got Seti 4.05 and it's accompanying debug file, the units all crunched at 5.5 to 6 hours each.

Also, Seti Classic still crunches WU's at the same 2.5 - 3 hour pace.

I am merely posting my message log to aid in any possible debugging or whatever. Mine was failing uploads and then started working again Sunday morning around 7am it looks like.

I am pretty sure that if you read Matt's post, you would have noticed that this is the exact issue that he says they are working on. Cut the devs some slack, they know and they are doing their best....

Matt, I don't want to be a pain in the ass! But this is the biggest problem at hand for the users.

I can handel the hardware probs and such we understand!
But the upload failure (see below)

A problem with file uploads has existed for the last few days. This problem causes file uploads to fail. We now understand the problem and are working on a fix - it will probably require upgrading your BOINC client. Please stay tuned.

Thanks for taking time to keep us posted Matt !!

We'll take our information any way we can get it. LOL

The completion times have indeed increased markedly, for whatever reason.

Thanks again for keeping us in the loop. 3 of my 6 machines are now working on "bad" WU's with communications disabled in the hope that the results will be uploadable sometime.

Warm Regards!

I guess Wordweaver does not read the posts before he shoots his mouth off.

The increase in time started with Seti 4.05 and all wu's displayed this and on all machines running 4.05

To answer some questions:

1. I didn't (and usually don't) post to the front page right away because (a) this is more of an informal setting so if I can be a little more "unofficial" with my posts, and (b) I get as many complaints about too much news on the front page than too little.

2. Regarding long WU's, nothing changed in the science code (or should have changed, I should say), that would increase the length of analysis time. Bear in mind that analysis time varies greatly from WU to WU based on the quality of the observation (how fast the telescope was slewing, etc.).

3. I'm still not fully comprehending the fallout from the file upload bugs, so I'm not sure if you should abandon your current WUs or not.

Matt - thanks. I have a couple questions though. Is the longer WU crunch time a lot of us are experiencing with Seti 4.05 normal? Should we continue to crunch WU's after we've experienced the upload failure or are we wasting our time and the servers resources?

Nice information :)

Another thing people have wondered about is the increase of computing time, that have almost doubled on the WU's. Is it debug code, more work done or something unknown(bug/mistake) that cause it? (this might have been answeded, but not in any of the threads I've read)

Thanx Matt, I understand the problem. Sometimes things need to be implemented in more than one spot to work :)
