I admit that I dropped out for a few years, but am happy to be contributing my small part. I don't CUDA, don't buy hardware specifically for the project, but I am just one of the quiet masses that add my part to the whole. Someday I will invest some time into figuring out the most energy and cost-effective way to boost my contributions. Which may be to contribute cash to the core project (which is also in short supply right now, but as soon as I will that lottery, watch out!) I did not expect it would take this long to find! I once figured the cost at $US0.17/day/machine. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty you can swap out the drives for older, smaller ones, some times scavenge half the RAM, take the DVD/CDROM and any other add-on cards beyond the minimum configuration.
