My "old" account says 14 May 1999, so it's 10 years and a bit....

2nd June 1999 for me. I think it was on the news or something like that - got me interested and the rest is history. I took a hiatus in about 2006/07 to work on other projects but came back last month.

PS - my account doesn't tell the whole story of my contribution as I think most of my credit ended up in a different account.

Greetings to all who donate their computer-spare-cycles to this project.

Just found this thread. Cool...

Started crunching on 3 June 1999.

My first SETI cruncher is still at it.

Hi All,

I missed my 10 year anniversary by four days.
Although I do vaguely recall having an earlier account that was somehow lost.
I let the side down somewhat, between 2001 and 2005 when I only did small amounts of work, and that intermittently.
I am amazed that 10 years have gone by; I recall comments at the time that it may take 20 years to succeed. Oh well half-way there.
Looking forward to the 20 year anniversary,

Terry

I do hope you're not paying for the electricity for that! :D

My first may have been a 200MHz Pentium Pro, but I'm not sure about that. I had a 1997 450MHz Pentium III until a few months ago when a desk move forced its retirement.

Started early in 1999, on 19th May.
If I remember correctly, there were only about a hundred signed on before that.
And most were before the official starting date.

Stopped SETI for a while after teething troubles with change to BOINC.
Ran CPDN, and still do so, on a MacBook.
Restarted SETI with PowerMacs on BOINC a few months ago.
Have a long way to go to reach my previous ranking!!!!

How could it be? P3 was introduced on February 26, 1999.

Yes I know it was so many years ago so everyone may don't remember.

Might have been 1999 then. Or something. Either way it was old and had been kept busy for most of its life running SETI.

My PIII's my original cruncher, started on 5 Jul 1999, had a PII 350MHz fitted then, over clocked to 396MHz, running windows 98SE,
since then it's been upgraded with a slocket, enabling me to fit a FC-PGA PIII 800MHz chip in the socket 1 Board,
and did the infamous P2B 1.8v mod to get the chip to work!, then overclocked it to 896MHz,
Since then it's run windows XP Pro on Seti Classic, Boinc Beta (RIP) as well as Seti(25 Jun 2004) and Seti Beta(29 May 2006), but not continously.

Sorry to go off topic but I gotta ask...

* Moderator, please move my post if I'm going to far off topic.

Josef, I see you are running an old 200 MHz. Pentium MMX too. Cool...

I have often wondered how many of us are still running old original SETI crunchers.

Who's got the oldest and slowest? Mine's old but it was the hot box of its day.

Doh, It's a Slot 1 Board, not a socket 1 Board.

Almost forgot it...

2 days ago I turned 10.
Actually unbelievable how fast the time runs.

Strangely I still remember that 5 Oct 1999 23:08:23 UTC (00:08:23 Local time) it was a cool and dark night, lights were toned down already in my room as I originally prepared to go to bed.
I couldn't rest, however, because I previously already had trouble signing up onto that "SETI Screenaver" and I didn't intend to give up that easily this day.

Moments later (after another attempt to create the account), I noticed the Program had downloaded data and started to work.

I looked at that Screensaver until 2am in the night before actually going to bed.

Back in these days, my AMD Athlon 500 (pretty fast machine for that time) easily took some 13-14 hours to complete a WorkUnit. Being hooked up to a 56k Modem at an expensive internet rate, every Up- and Download was manual business.
It wasn't until a month later that I discovered the much faster ways to compute data first by tweaking the Screensaver and eventually switching to the CLI Client.

Two month later, I managed to network my 2nd PC (AMD K6-2 400MHz) and allow it to crunch data as well (a WorkUnit took some 16 hours on that rig vs. ~9 on the Athlon).

Equipped with 2 CPU-Cores totalling 900MHz of computing power, I went into near fulltime-crunching these days.

Now - 10 years later - I look back and find I'm crunching SETI data for the seti.nl 10-year gauntlet, watching over 24 Systems (sporting 92 CPU Cores) dawing some 2.1kW electrical power which comfortably heats an entire house.

Still feels like a very lonely business though and explaining colleages or friends what this permanently humming, spanning over 2 rooms lineup of expensive computers does... still creates the same weird expression on their faces (commonly going along with a rather helpless "uh-huh").

But someone's got to get the job done. And if we don't - who would ?

26 June 1999 here. Been lurking for a long time and thought I'd say HI to everyone in the community! I never set up a sig picture or anything, just been crunching. Can someone point me to the "how to do a sig" thread?

How about an Anni Shirt, even if you only frame it like Carlos? Once your size is gone, sorry.
