I first heard about this project many years ago, but for some or another reason I never checked it out then. In 2006 a friend of mine told me he was crunching Seti, and asked if I wanted to join up. So I did. I was happy with it from the start.. and have always ment its great to be able to participate in science in this way. But for a long time I was not on these boards at all.. What happend..? ;-) |

I belong to the Planetary Society so I saw the item in their magazine. Thought that someone needed to reduce that data. Those were the days. Use a modem to connect and ask for another work unit.

I was in the office of a co-worker, talking about some work-related thing or another, when his screen saver kicked in. I asked him "What is that?" He told me and I was intrigued. I believe it was late in '99 I got signed up on SETI-Classic. Some time later after I had reached about 2nd place on the sign-up date charts, they pulled the plug on Classic. I had some trouble getting BOINC to work and so I gave up on it. Last year, on 24 March, I tried again and it worked! Later that year I bought a new computer and started crunching with it too. A few months later the CUDA code came out, which had some difficulties in the early versions so I went back to just CPU crunching. About a month later I downloaded BOINC v6.6.20, which was pretty solid, so I stayed with it. About mid-May, I downloaded the Optimized Apps, which have done wonders for my RAC: 6,800 and still climbing... |

Two things happened at about the same time. I was talking to a co-worker and he suggested the screen saver, and I got an email from the Planetary Society. BOINC WIKI |

I first learned about SETI@home on the HI IQ site but my computer at the time couldn't handle it. (Now I have a much, much better computer and cable internet.) This past Friday I was listening to Talk of the Nation on NPR (Science Friday) and the fellow they were interviewing was discussing the SETI@home project. So I got busy and now here I am on Monday with 205+ credits and a lot of questions. So glad to be doing something productive even when I am not doing a thing. |

Thank you. Now, if you don't mind, I would appreciate your - or someone's - assistance in dumping "owner" and using a name instead as well as direction in how to add a picture. Please use little words and be very specific as I speak very little computer. Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to render. |

IIRC there was a link to SETI@home classic from a Star Trek website ~10 years ago. So I followed it and joined the effort ;) |

Excellent!!!! Super Joker, I believe I have accomplished the task. If the name is Nin Ki instead of owner then I have your clear explanation to thank. If not, then I will go back and try again. |

I Remember reading about it in a magazine back in 1999 (cant remember which one now), back then it was looking for some volunteer testers to try out the the Seti@Home project, so I applied but didnt get accepted, so i forgot about it for a while, but found it and it was running full tilt, so i have been a member since September 13, 1999, crunched 1,517 WU and it took me 10,604 hours to do so ( very slow computer)

Thank you, Misfit. With your help I added the picture and a signature. The picture, by the way, is Nin Hursag or Nin Ki. Pictures of the ancients, whether real or imagined, tend to be tentative at best. Thanks to all who gave advice. I believe I will enjoy this site - not a nasty word to anyone that I can see. Courtesy is underrated. I know that a lot of the site chatter will fly above my head and wave as it passes by for a while - but we all know it takes repeated exposure to something for the little gray cells to begin building that foundation upon which knowledge rests. Have a good night. To the victor goes not only the spoils of war but, more importantly, the bias of history. |

Within a day or two of the project start, my oldest son said. Mom, there is this project out there, looking for ET via Radio Signals. Being the cautios type, I checked out the PS website. Gave the ok to install it to my son. I remember being so happy, when a WU finally finished and so bummed, when I had to wait for another one. A harddrive crash in 1/2000, you all know the routine, well I just opened a new account. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Was back in '01 while i was still at school, the library had 6 old warhorses grinding through WUs, the screen saver took up about 80% of their power. Put it on our family pc (didn't have my own) and it got through about 80 before it keeled over and died. Forgot about S@h until i got my own pc in late 2004, but couldn't remember my old login details. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

It's one small number of workunits for this man and a huge pile of workuinits for masnkind... Just a way to contribute to science since 1999... Never engage stupid people at their level, they then have the home court advantage..... |

Back in November of 1999, a friend had it running on his Mac, and since I had one also, I decided to try it. Soon I had 2 Macs and a PC running Classic. I dropped out of the SETI world for a bit, and started back with BOINC in August of 2006. I did try BOINC when it started out, but since the workunits didn't download immediately, I uninstalled it. Some of the info must have been kept in the registry, since my P4 is #21846 here at SETI. Since then it has been nowhere but up, except the bank account... EDIT: 24 Jun 2004 21:18:13 UTC for the P4... Clk2HlpSetiCty:::PayIt4ward

Im not sure i remeber it right, but at time i was working in a company, and was quite interested in all things IT, so i hang around in sysadmins office quite often. I believe it was there, where i saw the screensaver, and got interested. That was in 2000, and it took about 70 hours to get one WU done on P1-166. In Classic i managed to spend 10,106 CPU hours to get 1,126 workunits done. Was off the project for quite a while, but recently bought a new PC, so decided to give it a go once again :) |
