My system crashed hard. Long story. I am rebuilding it and have access to the old hard drive. Is there any way to recover the host id and work units that were in progress to the new hard drive and pick up were it left off? Like load BOINC and copy some directories? Thanks much. Windows XP SP3 |

Copy the BOINC program and data folders, then install BOINC on top of them and you should get everything back. Calm Chaos Forum...Join Calm Chaos Now |

Moved the BOINC program folder and loaded BOINC. No joy there. I re-read your message and I guess the data folders must be somewhere other then Program Files. I will have to try to hunt them down. Thanks. Copy the BOINC program and data folders, then install BOINC on top of them and you should get everything back. |

Thanks. Yeah, depending on your BOINC version and flavor of Windows, they could be in one of several places, most likely a hidden folder under C:\Documents and Settings. Do a search for BOINC and make sure it is looking for hidden files and folders. And you may have to uninstall BOINC before you copy again, I'm not sure if you need to or not. Got it. Just to be safe I un-install BOINC and start over with the copies. Worked like a champ this time. I am back crunching work units once again. Thanks much. |

Copy the BOINC program and data folders, then install BOINC on top of them and you should get everything back. Timely advice - was just about to post and ask. Just recovered from a hard drive crash and got back online (here). Apologies to my wingmen whilst I sort this out. I see already that I'm starting to miss the deadlines on a few WUs. I don't know if the old drive will come back long enough to recover the BOINC directories. Tried freezing it last night but it will only "click" when powered back up at the moment. A new HD and I am going to try it again. Regards, |

Hmmm...Just got the work units off the crippled drive last night and tried the above. No go. I even tried installing the new version over top of everything in hopes that it would give the whole bunch a good kick and get it to take on the old units. Any other suggestions? Thanks, |

did you get the WHole "Boinc" Folder? The workunits by themsleves mean nothing. The Boinc folder contains several files that are necessary. account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml - which is your identity client_state.xml - which information about your computer and what WU's it has "projects" folder which will contain the "setiathome.berkeley.edu" folder that has the workunts and executables. so without the "whole Boinc folder" it is not going to work. Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Ahhh...sounds then like I need to edit the client_state.xml to tell it the WUs are now there. The rest of the files are there as I'd reinstalled before I got the dead drive to come back (what really annoys me is that it now won't go back and die a final death!). Since everything else is already there from the install onto the new drive, do I only need to edit the client_state.xml file and get it to recognize the stranded WU's? Thanks, |

No, the tasks have been marked "Client detached" and reissued to other hosts. Even if that weren't so, getting all the details correct while editing client_state.xml would be difficult. Joe |

Interesting. I recovered the xml file as well went I got the drive to resusitate so I had been thinking of simply copying the <file_info> and <workunit> sections that corresponded to the various WU files. No eh? |

Interesting. I recovered the xml file as well went I got the drive to resusitate so I had been thinking of simply copying the <file_info> and <workunit> sections that corresponded to the various WU files. No eh? If any of the tasks are still shown as "In progress" server-side, then merging the related <file_info>, <result>, and <workunit> sections would probably work. Possibly even a result for a task marked "Client detached" might be accepted if you finished and reported it before the WU was resolved, but it wouldn't really be useful work since reissues have been sent. It's been a long time since May 10, anyhow, so most of the WUs have probably already been resolved. Joe |

Thanks for the guidance Joe. It worked - to the degree that I reported all the overdue tasks as "aborted" (?). Those that had not missed their deadline yet I'm now crunching. Regards, |
