This chipset also seems a bit power hungry in my book.

... Why, Intel, why put a nice low power processor with a power-hogging chipset?

Yes, I was also shocked when I first saw that setup. Pretty much an exercise in futility for "low power" operation.

Must be a "time-to-market" and profits thing...

Aside: Note that for number crunching, you get more RAC per Watt with a Core2 or Phenom system than for the Atom.

Happy crunchin',
Martin

I'm generally not looking at best RAC per watt because I don't buy computers just for SETI. My brand new C7 is going to be crunching, but that's because it'll be turned on anyway (and yes, I'll let it have Astropulse if that is what it gets).

What I'm looking at more than anything else are the indirect costs of running a server: UPS capacity and Air Conditioning.

Cut the power in half and run-time doubles. Lower power means less heat. Less heat means less A/C. Less equipment and lower power bills. Reduced wear on the A/C -- or maybe even eliminate it entirely.
