... Why, Intel, why put a nice low power processor with a power-hogging chipset? I'm generally not looking at best RAC per watt because I don't buy computers just for SETI. My brand new C7 is going to be crunching, but that's because it'll be turned on anyway (and yes, I'll let it have Astropulse if that is what it gets). What I'm looking at more than anything else are the indirect costs of running a server: UPS capacity and Air Conditioning. Cut the power in half and run-time doubles. Lower power means less heat. Less heat means less A/C. Less equipment and lower power bills. Reduced wear on the A/C -- or maybe even eliminate it entirely. |
