I don't care about the car, but the advertising possibilities boggle the mind...

It probably can't be sold here. No safety equipment, and I wonder if it could pass the impact tests required here...

The manufacturers plan for it to reach 4 on the European impact test before introducing it to European countries. The best most SUVs manage between a 3 and 4 star rating. Most cars here reach the maximum of 5 stars as their rating.

I agree with John here.
I dont think they will get a license for europe.

We made a crash test in our company with only 20 miles of speed.
The car was damaged til the back seat.
All paasengers would be dead.

Does this Car have a 4 cycle or a 2 cycle engine? If It has a 2, I don't know where this car can go, In the US It would need to meet all existing safety and tailpipe standards first and from what I've read the factory to make lots these cars is still being built and the company is still needing to renegotiate a $2 billion loan they got to buy 2 Car Lines that they then bought from Ford.

As far as I know, they use 4 stroke engines - 3 cylinders, I think. Don't forget, Tata also own Jaguar and Land Rover these days, as well as having large interests in steel production. I think that the idea is, to flood the markets with these small cars, so that in any collision test, they'd be going against another of the same, so.......... You get my 'drift'?! lol

The colision test in the US is done against a brick wall. In real life, it would take its chances against whatever else is on the road of course.

Just to help Your memory along(You must have been thinking of the Geo Metro), The News said the engine is only 2 cylinders and so does the Wiki on the Tata Nano Here.

It supposedly complies with the Euro IV emissions standards, and there is no way to do so with a 2 stroke engine, therefore it must be a 4 stroke 2 cylinder engine. Two cylinder engines have some design difficulties to avoid having a teeth rattling drive. Non-opposed 2 cylinder engines have several designs that have design chalenges. If both pistons move together, then the power flow is (sort of) smooth, but balancing the piston rods swinging around is difficult. If the two cylinders are 180 apart, the power flow is not going to be smooth as in a firing sequence (bang, bang, miss, miss), but is is easy to balance the piston rods as they balance each other. The problem is easier to solve with an opposed engine, but that makes the engine very wide. (The engine in my car is a 4 cylinder horizontally opposed or 4 cylinder boxer engine - smooth but the cylinder tops almost touch opposite wheel wells.).

I agree with John here.
I dont think they will get a license for europe.

On the other Dacia got a license what i can´t believe.
We made a crash test in our company with only 20 miles of speed.
The car was damaged til the back seat.
All paasengers would be dead.

Here is a crash test video of a large car in China, called Brilliance.
It earned a 1star rating in crash tests.
Very scary. It folds like a paper bag.

I can't imagine what would happen to that little Tata Nano.

Crash worthiness in the standard tests depends much more on design than on size. A large vehicle may have a longer crumple zone and a more rigid cabin, but it also has to stop more weight.

True enough. The Nano uses quite a bit of plastics in the bodywork, not unlike the Smart and lets face it, there are loads of cars that have done that for years - Lotus, Citroen and thousands of different 'kit cars', all to save weight. A bit of aluminium 'honey-comb', some fancy bonding and it'd be fine once you'd stuck a GSXR engine in it! All in all though, I think I'd sooner be in one of my Honda Legends in an accident, than a Nano. On second thoughts, I'd rather see a Nano wrecked, than any of my Legends! lol
